As do I. But I don't feel compelled to use the BOINC screensaver.

Not necessarily. Try this workaround.

I've also had to do a hard shutdown and reboot several times recently after the RAH screen saver apparently locked up the machine. {...}

There is a workaround for this:

Ctrl + Shift + Esc to force the Task Manager, then carefully move the mouse around until you can "find" it in the Task Manager window, at which point you can kill the screensaver process without having to shutdown the computer. As always, YMMV, but I've not lost any crunching time using this method.

But the simplest solution is to not use the BOINC screensaver...

having trouble with the minirosetta v1.28 it keeps locking up to where i have to either ctrl,alt,delete then end the program or to where i hit the windows button then close the program is there a fix for this once this has happened the screen saver is not doing anything thus resulting in the previous mention actions.

thank you

So the message REALLY is, DO NOT SHUTDOWN A COMPUTER THAT IS WORKING ON ROSETTA. TO LOSE POWER IN ANY FORM OR FASHION, AND THE LIKELIHOOD IS VERY VERY HIGH THAT YOU WILL LOSE ALL WORK ON THAT WORKUNIT!!!
{...}

In a word: no.

At the time of this posting, the last nine workunits reported by your computer all consisted of one model. The average time to complete that one model was 5999 seconds (about an hour and forty minutes).

For that computer, if you leave it on for less than an hour and forty minutes at a stretch, there is a chance you will lose all the work.

{...}
Should be able to get a new one tomorrow night.

If you change computers your results will likely change also. I hope that the new computer will allow you to work more comfortably and efficiently, and that (if you choose to continue) it will allow you to complete Rosetta workunits with less frustration.

Also, FWIW, the workunit I was crunching at the time of the screensaver glitches:

wuid=165647509

The plural is deliberate, as the screensaver has crashed many times in the space of a few hours.

Additional information: The monitor is prevented from going to standby by the hung screensaver.

I also grabbed a screenshot of the taskmanager, but I don't know if that would be any more helpful that what has already been posted.

I have RAC of over 7, so Rosetta has some experience with how much time is required. My losses are usually more like 3 hours, vs the 1 to 2 hours quoted here.

I disagree somewhat with the moderator's comments. If I do a orderly shutdown, Suspending Rosetta, then Exiting BOINC, then Shutdown XP, powerup at a new location, restart BOINC, Resume Rosetta, this SHOULD restart AT or close to the exit, i.e. if we are at 92% complete, if should restart at 92% or very very close to that. Most of the time, it goes to 0.0%

{EDIT: Replaced the missing letters.}

Robert,

First of all, I want to thank you for crunching for Rosetta. Problems not withstanding, I personally believe it to be among the best run and most worthy distributed computing projects.

I reviewed the history of the workunits you have completed. As of the time of this post, ALL of the successful completions report something like this:
# cpu_run_time_pref: 7200
# random seed: 3803289
======================================================
DONE :: 1 starting structures 4646.02 cpu seconds
This process generated 1 decoys from 1 attempts
0 starting pdbs were skipped
======================================================

Two things to note from this example:

1) Your CPU runtime preference is 7200 seconds. The BOINC manager noted that it took 4646.2 seconds to complete one model, so it didn't even start the second, since according to its experience (unique to each task) the completion of the next model would have exceeded your runtime preference.
----------

2) Many of the workunits coming out these days can only checkpoint at the completion of a model. Checkpointing is the only way that Rosetta can save the state of a workunit in a way that will survive the shutdown of the host computer. Suspending a workunit saves its state to the pagefile on your hard drive, but as soon as you shut down, the pagefile is lost.

Since all of the results your computer has been reporting have been "1 decoy from 1 attempt" it is likely that every time you shutdown, Rosetta has to start over again from scratch on that task.
-----------

SETI@home performs a fundamentally different task, orders of magnitude simpler that the tasks performed by Rosetta@home. It should not surprise us that the SETI workunits are more resilient to shutdowns, whether expected and orderly, or otherwise.

As dcdc points out in the preceding post, it may be possible for you to preserve the state of a workunit by using Standby or Hibernate rather than shutting down when you need to relocate.

I hope you will continue to crunch for Rosetta :-)

Respectfully,
David

It would be nice to get more information about this problem. Is it the screensaver application that is locked up or is it the minirosetta application which may effect the screensaver? The screensaver application name starts with "minirosetta_graphics".

The next time I perform the "workaround" I will try to get some screen shots. I will definitely take note of the exact names involved.

I've done the same thing for several days now. In frustration also aborted all the mini rosetta jobs...

I have the luxury of running a few dedicated crunchers. They are computers I don't use on a day-to-day basis, except to check the progress of Rosetta and/or RALPH.

If I had to work on and/or routinely use a computer that was running Rosetta, I would categorically not use the BOINC screensaver.

I know that the screensaver is a low priority for the developers. I understand that it is secondary (tertiary, quaternary ?) to the scientific goals of the project. I respect all of that.

That being said, I have always (two+ years) found the screensaver to be problematic for Rosetta. I have only my own experience to go by, and that experience is purely anecdotal (i.e. no data to back it up), but I find I get fewer errors when I don't run the screensaver.

Bottom Line:
Instead of aborting the mini-rosetta jobs, I personally would abandon the BOINC screensaver.

I'm having problems with the Rosetta mini screensaver.

I've run into this also, but I thought it was a machine-specific issue until now.

As a workaround, I have been succesful with the following:

Ctrl + Shft + Esc to force the task manager, the mouse acts a little strange, but it is there.

On the applications tab of the task manager, the Rosetta application will be listed with the parenthetical "not responding"

End the unresponsive task, which seems to be the screen saver, despite that not being in the name.

I have not yet lost any work with this process, nor have any of my results returned as invalid.

As always, YMMV

while I hope I'm wrong, it's possible that folks are leaving for Folding@Home. F@H just added nVidia cards and there is considerable excitement around F@H. They are now getting over 700 teraflops from GPUs alone (not counting PS3)

I think that most of the decline was due to t405 tasks stalling clients. We'll have to wait and see how much the teraFLOPS recovers over the next few days
