I think the team behaves inept, because of not enough developers, not coordinated enough internal organization, to optimize work on mobile devices, and/or not enough knowledge about programming and/or different computing hardware to do so.

This e-mail I just got, not hard to implement, text and hyperlinks, informing of stuff, the University of Washington according to 1 member receives a good amount of money to do this , and they could go Wikipedia style and ask for donations in a mailing list, and pay well, I don't know 7K$ to a few developers to do what's left, they don't seem to care

Hello Rosetta Team

I'd like to see a GPU Client for Rosetta@home.

GPU is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH faster than CPU.

THANK YOU

Balmer

Switzerland

Yes and well done projects like Folding@Home have both CPU+GPU clients, but it won't happen on this project because is a marely functioning mediocre one unfortunately, not enough developers or they don't know much what are they doing, Rosetta@Home is huge in RAM and Storage, it's not responsive, specially the Android client, unless you have a really fast SoC on your phone, have lots of WU shortages, etc, Android client looks like it's being developped but still WCG was always good at keeping the WUs relatively small and if not "light", responsive and not needing much RAM; so I think R@H is huge on RAM and Storage is because it's not well developed, probably never was, now must be a nightmare to do it, anyway, this happened on a Optical recognition of Cancer Cells in WCG, each WU took at least 6 hrs, up to 12, typically 8-10 hrs, so a guy came that new about the field of study and had experience in Distributed Computing and made a lot of optimizations, even the results were more precise, most WUs took 2 hr, so this doesn't happen here, probably never will, I have complained many times about different issues and how they don't even put enough WUs on the Queue, and all I got were empty promises that will never happen again, also made suggestion and they just never even said thank you.

GPUs are basically massive parallel execution FPUs, so yes, they can calculate the 3D positions of protein molecules and even make some physics, for sure nVidia GPUs, but I think AMD ones too, so the people that are verbally attacking you because because they're covering for the ineptitude of this project, so I'd recommend going with Folding@Home if you have a recent enough GPU, it's also protein folding, so you'd be helping scientist with it. World Community Grid doesn't have GPU clients for most projects.
Cheers.

Also for everyone make a clear distinction between Cores and Threads, 64 Cores? I doubt it, probably 32 Cores which gives you 64 Threads or 32C/64T CPU. To see them in Windows:
1) Right click on 'Task manager'
2) Go to 'Performance' Tab
3) CPU should be selected by default on the left panel, on the right one right-click and choose 'Change Graph To' pull-down menu and choose 'Logical Processors'

Now R@H is inefficient in many ways, so if you use 100% of the Threads, Windows will be unresponsive, with WCG it's the opposite, the RAM usage is really Low: 4x80 MB, 3x250 MB, only 1 is 480 MB=1560 MB= 1.5 GB of RAM on my AMD FX-8370 8C/8T, but in my PC I never felt unresponsive, only on my 2 Android phones, I think maybe it's the Core 0 on Windows problem, due to UMA/NUMA mishandling by Windows.

Your RAM have to be the same CL=CAS latency and voltage and frequency that the previous 1 or you'll get sudden freezes, hangs, restarts

That beast of a CPU is a beauty, enjoy it, just make sure it's well cooled and also the VRM heat-sinks are not too hot and that have enough phases, overcloking should be very possible at least to its boost frequency, best of lucks

IMO This is a mediocre designed project, specially for Android, WCG uses far less RAM and Storage while being very responsive, R@H is all the opposite. I'd recommend to have 2 3,000 RPM fans on that cooler, also 2 3,000 RPM fans on on the back of the case and 3 3,000 RPM fans on the top and 3 3,000 RPM fans on front of the case, take the front panel off, leave the air filter for better air flow, 3,000 is not laud at all, you'll get used to it, or at least make them 2,000 RPM, that's very silent still, even 2,400-2,500

But your problem might be Windows if you use it, might be the UMA/NUMA problem with modern CPUS with 16+ Threads

Yeah I read it, but you're oversimplifying the problem a lot. R@H needs per core 0.25 GB RAM and 0.5 GB Storage, or it won't run correctly, I have tested this myself. Yes the problem seem to be complex, but as I wrote WCG only needs 33M Storage for 2 cores and 37 MB for 4 cores, the phone is very responsive and all cores run without a problem, the Huaweiy Y330 has Android 4.2 and the AX-1073+ has 7.0, fails on both except if I take 1 or 2 cores and give constant control over the devices being very unresponsive and computing even when screen i son, because if they stop, for whatever reason, they reset the WUs to a very early stage or completely back to 0.0%, even when BOINC has a setting for saving the states of WUs every 60s, I set it to 111s, but it doesn't matter. So in conclusion, is my honest opinion this is a mediocre designed project at best, and has been for a very long time, and nobody is fixing it, or even remotely plans to do so, which leaves it as a unnecessarily too demanding app with a really bad user experience in mobile devices, plus shortages, so at least for old/limited Android devices this is a no-go app, its' not optimized for efficiency much, so I'll stay out of it for good

I think the Rosetta@Home BOINC client is not well designed, when it doesn't get the huge amounts of Storage or RAM, it constantly resets the Work Units (WUs), over and over. Also is very Unresponsive, on my very crappy phone I can afford now, AX-1073+ 16GB Storage but only 1GB RAM, as always apps take up to 75% and even with 600MB Page file to extend the Virtual Memory, looks like R@H client only cares for physical free RAM and when depleted will terminate the WU and star over, like that was going to solve the problem. At the seems each R@H WU demands minimum 0.25 GB RAM and 0.5 GB Storage as opposed to World Community Grid I can run just fine only 33 MB for 2 WUs on all 2 Cores of my Huawei Y330, run at 100% and the phone is I'd say 95% responsive, my 4-Core AX-1073+ also 100% on all 4 cores, and is also 95% responsive, doesn't resets the WUs, I give BOINC 100% RAM on both phones.

So in conclusion R@H client behaves dumb, too demanding, very inefficiently wasteful on computing resources. I already complained about this, R@H wrote we don't have an active dev. and we don't have money to hire 1, and suggested make a Wikipedia like calling for donations, hire 1 at I think standard 5,000$/Month, Wikipedia asks every year for 6,000,000$ and they get it, I think people will donate for so much good R@H does to Humanity, small amounts does it, and is still non-for-profit, but R@H just don't have the organization to take care of this, pity, is relatively easy to solve and it's hurting this project a lot, I hope they solve it, but this have been going on for months if not years.

Also many WUs give computation error, division by zero or something really bad, many hours of computing wasted, this is not good for R@H reputation, and people might want to change to better designed medical/biological science distributed computing projects, and this project is from University of Washington, can't they afford 5k$ for 3 months? this is BS

No Android WUs for a week, shortages and these other problems give the impression R@H wheels are falling off the wagon, I don't know how long I'd stay with R@H because of this, this really annoys me

Can't run on my Bmobile AX1073+ 4-core A7 CPU, installs download the database and WUs, but will not run them, why? I have a A7 2-core and will run in 1-core only, is it RAM? I have enough Storage for all that is needed, it has to be RAM, will try with 2 cores, right now it hangs my phone

For a short while my AMD FX-8370 8-core, no Hyper-trheading, CPU had about 800MB-1.2 GB per core and had 8 GB RAM, DDR3-1333, so it saturated and Widnows started to thrashing, swapping RAM segments to the Swap File, 12 GB, plenty of room but the processing became erratic and constant thrashing, pretty sure the 8 WUs didn't need the 8 GB at once, very unlikely, so I think R@H and BOINC RAM algorithms are not optimized for efficient processing, should only swap the parts that are least used or will be used, as consequence a lot of the tasks won't even run or at low %, I made sure everything was closed and maximized the available RAM, even upgraded the 'lowest' priority given by default to above normal, nothing worked, so I installed 8GB of RAM more, problem solved. Thw problem isn't swapping much, it's how is done, not pro-actively, not pro-processing, and way too much, swapping is notmal, when done properly is transparent and will greatly improve processing not only of an app, but all apps and the operating sysytem. Therefore I think BOINC needs to hire a couple software engineers and review its RAM management and swapping, then pass the word how to Projects can efficicently cooperate and coordinate with BOINC and the host Operating System for efficient WU processing, it's about time, ver. 7 s up and the WUs get bigger and processing is more complex, this is getting worse as time goes by and can only get worse if pro and good software designers take a good look at it

Then is both. I have set BOINC to use 100℅ of available RAM, Android is a version of Linux, it has a Swap partition to free up RAM, 1 GB RAM, 600 MB Swap in my case, that should free enough for 4 WUs to work properly in Android I think

I'm also become Vegan, dropped 22 Kgr and improved my health over all, my mind is sharper and clearer, I have better muscle response, less tired, more energetic, no stomach pains or any problems, no heartburns/reflux, it cures many types of Cancer, because the body can do it, and it's not hyperactive trying to fight fat molecules.

This Scientific Research is good tho, we need the knowledge to understand how proteins in our body behave, so keep up the good work

Laptops are horribly cooled, so I'd look for that before buying 1, but BOINC will run by default at 60% CPU time, on 100% of Cores, depends how you use your Laptop, if you game or use 3D Apps it will take a lot of resources and computing power so CPU Cores and GPU will saturate probably, and won't be that much help, so maybe custom tweaks should be done. IMO a good computer should be able to sustain 100% workload, mine is overcloacked 10% CPU 8-Core and GPU, stable

I have like 600+ GB free space left, I have set BOINC to use 99.9% of it, to leave 0.01GB free, clearly I have set it correctly yet, Rosetta@Home downloads sometime 20+ MB per WU, why? do you really need that much data? can't you leave the trunks from where other WUs will branch off to compute? why so much downloading? I have seen this behavior for months, and the names of them seem similar somewhat, so maybe you're not being as efficient as you could with the organization of what needs to be left as cache? Can you check this? I'd prefer to download the least possible, for efficiency and bandwidth sake. Also those databases get duplicated and they don't get modified at the seems, I have compared a couple by content with Total Commander and they're identical with the originals, if they're not goign to be modified why not use the compressed file only and extract the files that the project is going to use only directly to RAM?
Here is a view of the files and folders:
