Problem has been resolved. It was the number of cores. I guess I won't earn credits so fast but that's OK, I am not in for the race, I just want to contribute to something worthwhile.

What version of BOINC are you using? I recently downgraded from 7.2.xxx to 7.0.65 on my ubuntu desktop because it was making my system unresponsive in much the same way (despite 12GB ram for 4 cores)

7.2.31. I'll try some of the memory and cpu suggestions before I downgrade

Thanks for all the suggestions, which I will take a look at

Just recently I have noticed that when Rosetta is running, my PC's cursor action is severely slugged. Mouse movement is not reflected in cursor movement for several seconds. I tried disabling GPU - no difference and CPU usage is already limited to 25%. Has anyone else seen this issue?

I know it's Rosetta because as soon as I suspend it, cursor behaviour immediately returns to normal

5) Message boards : Number crunching : Rosetta / BOINC Screen saver causes a BSOD (Message 76233)

A couple of times I have come to my PC to do something. wiggled the mouse to clear the screen saver and found that the system is unresponsive. I have blank blue screens on both monitors and no keyboard or mouse action will clear it.

Original solution was to reboot, although I have since discovered that Alt+Ctrl+Del will enable me to get to Windows 8 task manager and then to other screens.

It may be related but I also note that the screen saver is just a blank screen. I rarely get the graphic screen that describes the activity. That's no big deal as it's all gobbledegook to me but I wondered if it was significant?

It shouldn't ever sit there with an empty queue if any of the projects on your list have work available.

Regarding duration, BOINC works on a debt principle so it'll try to balance the projects as per your preferences. If it runs lots of Rosetta because there's no other projects available then it'll try to rebalance the debt when it can.

I would recommended increasing the duration because switching projects takes time to write to disk and initialise.

Thanks Danny - much appreciated

Hi everyone. I have just joined the Rosetta project. I have been running the Fight Malaria @ Home project for a while, but as WU's have dried up a bit there I thought I'd add another project.

Rosetta WU's are in the order of 3:30hrs whilst Malaria's are 0:15 ish. AND fight malaria currently has no new tasks to dispense. If I leave BOINC at the default 60 mins between apps swaps:

a) Will it come straight back to Rosetta if it finds no work to do or will it site there idle until the next swap interval passes?

b) with the disparity between WU durations, am I better off setting the swap apps interval to say 480 minutes to allow Rosetta WU's to complete, or does it make no difference if I leave it at 60 mins?

I'd appreciate some advice please. TIA
