41) Message boards : Number crunching : Windows x64 official Boinc client in testing (Message 39712)

Post:
Does it run the x86 rosetta app? Or does it only run x64 science apps?

AFAIK, it will only request a 64 bit app. Rom has written the code for the core client to fall back to requesting the 32 bit science app when no 64 bit one is available.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/ticket/80

But it appears there is still work to do client side as well as sever side. It is listed as a 5.10.x milestone though. So perhaps on the next major release.

I have read somewhere that you should shut down Boinc before shuting down
the computer when you run Vista.
Has anybody any info on this?

This post has a work around. Be warned, it involves registry hacking.

If the time frame is ridiculously long go to the projects tab and highlight the waiting project, then click "Update Now". That should initiate a connection and reset the timer. Sometimes, if the project is down a while, BOINC can up the communication delay to a ridiculous value, like a week or more. It's actually a bug that should be fixed in an upcoming version.

It is fixed in latest alpha version. We're testing the crap out of it right now trying to get it ready for release.

I believe Rytis (of PrimeGrid) is responsible for the BOINC forum code.

You might want to drop him an email (you'll have to see if you can find it on the PG site) or post in the forums there with idea you have. If they are feasible he might be able to work them into the standard BOINC server code.

sk which BOINC version are you running on the box in question? BOINC is adding a new feature, I believe it is in beta presently, which allows you to use a fraction of the CPU. Check General Preferences top section on processor usage, last entry for "use at most ... %". You want 100%.

Some users have machines that run too hot, or fan makes too much noise, so they want to use less then 100% to control things. BOINC goes idle for a second once and a while to achieve the desired CPU usage... but only once you get to... wish I could remember which BOINC version. I think it is BOINC 5.5.

It was introduced in the 5.5 alpha line. They are alpha testing the 5.7 line.

Use at your own risk. I can tell you I'm having a heck of a time getting the throttling to work. It runs for about 5.5 minutes wall time and then all processing stops.

I don't see sinus and ear problems as "neuisances". For some people they can be very signficant.

I've had ear surgery from the impact of ear infections and have lived with chronic sinus infections all my life.

The cost of those to insurance are significant.

Just my 2 cents.

I can't add anything to solving his problem, but hotmail stinks.

I've found that it'll eat messages for no good reason.

For example, I get two daily emails. Things will be going along swimmingly, and then for no apparent reason I won't get them for a few days.

The missing messages never show up.

I know they are getting sent because when I started having the problem I subscribed using a gmail account and got them there ok.

What is your runtime preference?

The estimated time to completion usually isn't accurate b/c the percent complete only updates at the end of a model.

If you can take a peak at the graphics look for the end of a model (don't know how many step it is tho). It will checkpoint at the end of each model.

I fired Rosie back up to 100%. I occassionally have to snooze BOINC b/c of heat, but you can have my cpu time for the next 8 days. Then I'm flying back the US and won't have internet access until the second week of August. My poor CPU won't know what to do with itself.

'Merge' is now enabled (Server Upgrade)....Cheers, Rog.

I tried merging the three computers named "TOM" (account tomba). No joy. They are most definately identical; I only have one!!

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Do any of them still have pending results on them?

I'm not sure but I think all results must be cleared out to merge.

If I'm wrong, sorry.
