Congratulations to me! I feel like a bit of a fool though. No pic and the info is over 2 years old too...

Regardless, thanks to whoever gave the thumbs on that one. I do appreciate it.

I couldn't stand it anymore. I changed some of the info. Can you believe I was a Political Science Major :

I found that on the activity tab, network activity suspended was selected although that didn't match selections on the main screen. Even curiouser -- I realized that the due date on those two tasks was 12/13/1901 ! Messages in the last couple of minutes show the stalled tasks have uploaded, so whatever was going on seems to have ceased its mischief.

Sorry, I misspoke, the current deadlines are 10 days from the date of download. But December 13 still is not a possible due date.

You may want to check your system clock. If that is wrong you may have problems in the future with any number of programs, including BOINC.

Not going to make much difference how many users you get if they have to wait days to get work units. It is silly to have to wait 6 days for a work unit. Finally get one, process it and go on waiting for another unit. I have P4 dual core running 3.15 GHz with 1.5 GB RAM and I sit and wait days for something to do.

If you are taking a server down for maintenance Grab something off the shelf and put it in it's place to send/receive work.

Excellent project with great goals, but if I cannot do work for you, I will be tempted to find a project that keeps my system busy. Please stop wasting my time!

This is the exact reason why BOINC works so well. I have three backup projects for just this reason. Regardless of whether or not I am getting work from Rosetta I am always crunching for some project. And when Rosetta came back I started exactly where I left off. I didn't lose one second of Crunch time, not one cycle (even though I wasn't crunching for Rosetta).

Stick around here but sign up for some other projects as well and let BOINC do its job.

But what about udating Rosetta? Does Rosetta update the version automatically and if not how will I update it? (ie. install the new version over the old or uninstall first etc.)
Thanks again

Rosetta will update to version 5.73 when the WU is sent to you. This is an automatic process and you will need to do nothing. Also, you may see 2 versions of Rosetta running at the same time (currently 5.73 & 5.68). This is also normal and expected at times.

Happy Crunching!

I'm currently studying all of the general education, low-level science courses at my local community college. I'll be leaving for university May 2008 but I have not settled on a major yet.

Like many, I want to live forever (or at least as long as I want) and I want to be a part of this through my own research in the future. With the many numerous routes I could take for a Bachelor of Science degree I was wondering if anyone had advice on which direction I should take. My plans include a Ph.D in the future but I would like some advice on the B.S. first, where do I start?

Thanks in advance!

On mine they all do begin with gp04 but not all of them take that much ram. Some only take 75mb or so others take 750+ mb so either there is some sort of a memory leak or some sort of other error.

I am getting the exact same thing. My first gp04 unit is taking 780 MB and the second is currently at 118 MB.

Glad to help.
I think AVG is more neutral to programs than CA.
Its just one of those weird things I guess.

I successfully uninstalled CA AV this evening and installed AVG AV instead. So far it seems to be okay. I rebooted the computer and all seems well then too. Hopefully this will solve the problem. Thanks for all the help, Greg, Tim and Danny!

I agree with you there Greg, much more neutral. Glad to help as well!

did you run any sort of registry cleaner?

No. I did not run any registry cleaner. Should I?

try ccleaner and if you can get a copy of errorguard that might help as well.
wait for the experts to give you some hints in addition to what i said.

Thank you for your reply. I will wait and see what else comes up.

Thanks again!

IMHO it is not necessary to run any reg. cleaner right now. Your computer has a built in "oops what the heck just happened" button called System Restore (Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Restore). The process is safe and won't cause any problems with your registry and it is reversible. Try a time to rollback when the problem did not exist and go from there. You'll lose only programs that were installed since the last time a checkpoint was made (not any media, word files etc!)

I think you should try AVG antivirus though (uninstall all other antivirus programs first)--free and reliable. Post back if this does not work for you--Good Luck!

It may be a straight foreward Answer but i couldent find it in the FAQ.

Is there a limit of computers that you can use for a project?

example;

I have 4 Server computers, all of them have BOINC, and all of them have Rosetta added, yet only one of the computers is actualy working with rosetta, the others are just sitting there, moving dust particles and heating the air arround it.

All 4 Server computers have the same list of projects

Seti
Rosetta
QMC
World Community Grid
Climate Prediction
Protein Folding

I'm looking to add more project in the future

I would like the 4 Server computers to work at the projects at the same time ( one task preformed by 4 computers )

Not meaning that every Server computer is running all added projects it seams to do only 2 at the time

also in the future i'm aiming to add 4 extra Server computers

Am i aiming to high with my current project i have i mind and would it be better to shut down 3 of the servers ?

or am i doing something wrong ?

There is no limit as to the number of computers one can have for any project. The more the better as far as I am concerned :)

Each computer will run 1 workunit per CPU. So, if one of your computers has 1 CPU then you can run 1 workunit, 2 CPU--up to 2 workunit's, 4 CPU--up to 4 workunit's, and on. Please note that you cannot work on the same workunit spread over several computers.

The order in which a workunit runs on your computer is determined by the resource share you give to the project that the workunit belongs to. I noticed that you have 6 projects per computer, so if the resource share for all of those projects were equal then each project will have an equal share of time. In short, the greater the resource share for any particular project the greater the amount of time that that project is allowed to run before switching to another workunit.

I hope this helps you out. Please check the Rosetta@home FAQ for more information.

I agree that this is a BOINC problem and not Rosetta problem. I learned early on to open the manager from the task bar by RIGHT clicking the icon then selecting the "Open BOINC manager" option. If I double click the left button to open it then the odds are that I will have to reboot or kill all the boinc tasks to get the manager to run again. This is on Windows machines. On my linux boxs I have learned to minimize the manager and never "close" the manager or I get a simular problem.

Jim

Well it became such a problem that I had to roll back to 5.4.11. Also, I can't even "right" click the icon. The BOINC "bubble" pop up doesn't even appear when the mouse hovers over the icon. I haven't seen anything like this on the BOINC boards, Has anyone else?

Has anyone else been having problems opening the BOINC manager from the task bar? I've had this problem at random times for at least the past 4 development releases of BOINC up to the current 5.8.3. Task manager shows both Rosetta threads taking 50/50 CPU share per normal. The only way I can open BOINC manager is if I kill the process and then restart. Anyone else seeing this? Should I consider this strictly a BOINC problem not Rosetta?

About a year a go I was running Rosetta along with another project and to make a long story short, I detached Rosetta. Sorry about all the posts, but I would like to get it up and running again.

F. Prefect--

Have you tried doing a Rosetta project reset through the BOINC manager. I've read your other posts and I do not believe you should have to delete any files manually. A reset of the project should delete the files not needed and reload the files that are.

You can do this by left clicking on Rosetta under the projects tab and then "reset project" under commands. Hope this works.

Tim

Edit: There are certainly other issues that can be looked at later regarding resource shares and project debts etc. However, I do offer one caution, BOINC is designed to work through all of this on its own. If Rosetta is fine before or after the reset, BOINC will allow work eventually on its own terms. Often its best to just leave BOINC manage the projects as this is what it is designed to do.

Rosetta v5.43 is regularly "hanging" on me. I'm running the Windows version w/ BOINC screen saver set. Often when I return to my machine I have to kill the rosetta process to get to my desktop.

This isn't new to 5.43. I have another machine running rosetta that does not have this problem but I also use another screen saver on it. This machine is a dual 2.8GHz machine w/ 1GB RAM.

@Renouard

This is a known issue which will be tackled by the Rosetta team after the new year. For now, please do not use the screensaver or view the graphics while running Rosetta. This is only a partial fix but should save you from any "hanging" WU's. Thanks!

Timothy
