Posted 11 Feb 2010 by Evan Post: I'm just tired of the limitations of human competency to solve problems in a fast and efficient manner, instead of fumbling in the dark for eons - ONLY because of the limitations of human intelligence/competency. How fast would an extremely advanced AGI solve basically all of our medical problems? So clearly spinning 7 (or 10 or 15) years into a "reasonable" timeframe is masquerading the deeply hurting truth of human helplessness in the face of greater problems - all of while hundreds of thousands of people will die BECAUSE OF THAT - human incompetency, nothing else. If you claim otherwise, be my guest. I guess the lack of outrage at such timescales where there is complete knowledge of the huge amount of people that will die is the result of resignation - that we, as humanity, simply can't do any better. And looking at that truth in the eye is like looking the devil straight in the eye. Utter dread, horror. We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams we would be reorganized. Presumably the plans for our employment were being changed. I was to learn later in life that, perhaps because we are so good at organizing, we tend as a nation to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency and demoralization Petronius (c. Jobs lock up and never finish
(Message 65205)
Posted 4 Feb 2010 by Evan Post: Jobs such as these never finished, in the BOINC client they look frozen but the job doesn't utilize any cpu I have had a few of these. I find that if you either suspend that work unit and then reactivate it, or exit BOINC and restart. The work unit then usually competes normally. |

After restarting boinc they are running from their last checkpoint and ironically both are working on model 10 |

Validation (pharmaceutical companies)
(Message 65117)
Posted 26 Jan 2010 by Evan Post: Not sure if that answers your question? Yes it does thank you. I was thinking along the lines of once a bond had been produced then an improvement to the model might produce an even better bond, but as you say it would be a different substrate. |

Validation (pharmaceutical companies)
(Message 65115)
Posted 26 Jan 2010 by Evan Post: How is validation done by a company using algorithms developed by Rosetta? As I understand it all computer software, equipment, procedures and results have to be replicated to the level demanded by a country's FDA (or similar). This may cost the company vast sums to prove its acceptability. Therefore if a company uses a successful Rosetta algorithm and finds a suitable drug, what happens if there is an improvement to this algorithm? Do they have to repeat all this expensive validation? |

BOINC/Rosetta and GNU way of thinking
(Message 65100)
Posted 25 Jan 2010 by Evan Post: The work that is being processed will not be sold to a pharmaceutical company because they wouldn't want them. The results are in the public domain so that they could not secure a patent on them. In addition a rival company could look at the same results and deduce what this company was trying to develop. The completed algorithms are what the companies want and are made freely available to companies or other universities to use and spend years trying to develop new drugs. Baker Lab is not permitted to sell their algorithms to any company. |

I wish i could give you guys more information, anything else i can do to help you guys solve this issue? All other work so far has gone through fine, but upon further investigation the common factor is windows 7. I have a boinc_filtered loopbuild_threading running now at 33% which gave me problems on 2.03, so i will see how it goes on 2.05 and give an update. I wouldn't worry about it. A number of these have failed. I have just sent in two that failed on their second run. |
