1) Message boards : Rosetta@home Science : Can anyone help me visualize the relationship between so many CPU workunits and the complete characterization of a protein? (Message 74038)

I just mean that I've been crunching awhile and I have no idea of the scale of my personal efforts. I enjoy Rosetta, and I've been curious for awhile about how much computing power it takes to, say, come up with a satisfactory CASP protein prediction. I imagine it changes dramatically with changing goals, but there are probably generalizations you can make, order-of-magnitude wise, about a run-of-the-mill protein with so-many amino acids involved. Or maybe not. Who knows? I don't.

As computers get better, will Rosetta swallow up all those advances to do bigger and better things?

There is a Malaria boinc project in closed alpha testing stage - http://africa-home4.cern.ch/malariaControl

I don't know any of the science behind the project. I don't even crunch this project. I am just mentioning it because Vanita mentioned malaria in his post.

Assuming you are talking about malariacontrol.net (the link didn't work for me), that is actually a very different sort of project. They model the spread of malaria through populations of people and mosquitoes as a way of predicting the success of various interventions. For example, if some research outfit developed a vaccine with 25% efficacy, the malariacontrol.net people would have strategies and advice on the most effect rollout. But they don't do any of the molecular work themselves.

More, `no work sent`
I now have two core`s on backup projects from lack of work here
I am sure it will get fixed.

It`s all green on the server status page
but only one work unit showing ready to send.

I'm having the same problem.

Gotcha. Basically, if I keep abreast of the stickied threads in this forum, I'll be able to keep up with the science of what my computer is crunching. Thanks! It's a big issue with these distributed computing projects -- your computer keeps working, but you aren't, and steadily lose track of what exactly you are accomplishing. I'm going to try to stick with Rosetta because everyone seems so communicative and well-spoken. Also, the results go in actual journals!

On one of these pages about science, there is a link to an Active Workunits Log, which had descriptions of the goal of different types of workunits. The log stops sometime in 2007. Is it being updated anywhere else, or is that something that has since been abandoned? It seemed like a really cool idea.
