1) Message boards : Number crunching : Waiting for validation (Message 108343)

Hello,

I completed a task on "11 Oct 2022, 2:04:55 UTC" but "Completed, waiting for validation".

Will it ever finish?
What can I do that it will ever finish?

Task: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/result.php?resultid=1498329765
Work unit details: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/workunit.php?wuid=1331247824
Computer: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/show_host_detail.php?hostid=5955096

It seems I have the same issue,

"Completed, waiting for validation", since 11 Oct 2022, 2:04:55 UTC.
How much longer do I need to wait? :/

My Task: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/result.php?resultid=1498329765
Workunit: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/workunit.php?wuid=1331247824

EDIT: But (as the time of writing) https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/server_status.php actually states -> "Workunits waiting for validation 0"

Thanks for the answers.

Since VirtualBox 5 is no longer available (by default) for my distro... I guess I will settle with a cronjob which restarts BOINC every 12h (for now).

And I will opt out of VirtualBox task as soon as WCG is operational again or something major changes on the Rosetta side... :

Hello, I am getting lots of

"ERROR: Vboxwrapper lost communication with VirtualBox, rescheduling task for a later time."
which kind of results in the task being stuck until I restart BOINC. After a restart, the task finishes almost instantly and is successfully validated.

Running on Linux,
Kernel: 5.16.10
BOINC: 7.16.17
VirtualBox: 6.1.31_SPB

Example task: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/result.php?resultid=1474366151

What bothers me is that the task is stuck (it needs a BOINC restart/manual action), but also that it seems to have ended just fine.

Is something wrong with my VirtualBox? It only happens for some tasks.
Can I do something to improve this?

I looked at https://boincstats.eu/en/stats/14/project/detail/host (bottom right chart),
it says, of all hosts:
- 68,34% Linux
- 27.5% Windows

Then a wrote a quick script to grep all (visible) hosts by the predictor of the day:
Windows: 448848 (90.5034015800107%)
Linux: 47098 (9.49659841998927%)

How does this add up? Is this just the work of the mighty random god? Or should I install windows right now to have a chance? ;-)

FTR: Yes, I ignored Darwin/Android/FreeBSD/...

I just noticed that there is not always a "predictor of the day".

For example between 23 Apr 2020, 0:00:00 UTC - 15 Apr 2020, 0:00:00 UTC was no predictor of the day.
And maybe today as well?

Why? Did some people refuse to be publically highlighted? Or did the "predictor of the day"-service just crash in this time? Or did the results turn out to be invalid?

I am sure some people crunched numbers hard in this time frame and deserve the spotlight ;-)

Then let me rephrase, it is open to me or any other developer who wants to help?
-> Nope.

I am not even talking about that everyone can use its own client to push data to rosetta, I would still prefer to get the official binarys from rosetta directly.

I am also not talking about making super huge changes here. But how about just investigating? like a crashing testdata, or maybe something that makes the client "stuck"?

I can't do that without the code. Or rather is super painful without the code.

So I just want make the life a tiny bit more easier for them. But a performance optimization may also be possible, but as you said too, thats not the main focus for now.
I am also kinda worried that rosetta currently misses the arm cpu train, as those devices get more and more powerful and are widely spreed. Well thats another topic... but "someone" could do the porting, which in best case is rather minimal and would almost change nothing. But without code....

Hello,

after a few months break I am back and running boinc/rosetta a much as possible. My cpu is really not thaaaaaat super powerful anymore, but as I am not getting a new cpu soon, this is currently all I can do.

I want to help more and I don't know how.
In other projects I would start to hack the code... but there is no code... why?

I know I can code, and I know there are LOTS of people who can code even more and better, why can't they help you? As I think this is a very important project you could only benefit from more help, or? This would not only be beneficial for you, but maybe also for the whole mankind as this could lead to faster problem solving and maybe faster healing diseases.

I just can not understand why you demand on your closedsource client. Maybe you should rethink opening your sourcecode. I just want to help you...
