61) Message boards : Number crunching : Many .01 Results (Message 30797)

Post:
0.01 rmsd results only show up on 2 of the WUs I've turned in; one of which was my 0.01; although someone else had a better (lower) energy than my result.

It does seem like the rmsd calculations are broken.

Give 5.36 a try, and if you get equally bad results, then Rhiju's changes to 5.36 didn't cure the issue for your machine. Post a message in the 5.36 error thread. We don't always get personalized replies here.

I may have got a few - but most of them were (Your message has been moved to another thread because it was off topic.) *grin*

I'm still reporting about 86,400 seconds of crunching around every 86,400 seconds. (Losing about 5 mins a day?)

Where are you seeing that Rosetta is only getting 1min 30 seconds of cpu time every 30 mins? Is that from Boinc, from windows task manager, or some other program?

And if you pull up the windows task manager.. what process or processes is/are getting the most cpu time?

328 and 545 points for 18? seconds seems a bit out of line. :)

If hardware tests come back saying the hardware is fine; connecting systems with high error rates to Ralph (at least giving them some time on Ralph) will help track down the source of the higher than average errors showing up on some systems.

Someone last night mentioned having a few WUs turned in that were given much lower credits and blamed it on 5.34. They were getting around what they asked for by 5.34 until they started running WUs that were similar to this:
1hz6A_BOINC_NATIVEJUMPS_CLOSE_CHAINBREAKS_VARY_ALL_BOND_ANGLES_SAVE_ALL_OUT__1306_8456_0
and then they were suddenly getting 1/3rd of the their claimed credit. You're doing much better in that regard; getting 44 and 48 when asking for about 60. (Although one didn't get to the 25k second range.).

With the large range of problems with your winxp machine, would you mind trying to diagnose the problems? Rule out hardware problems on your end by testing the ram with Memtest86+, some type of HD check - (windows checkdisk is a start - but the diagnostics from your HD's manufacturer would be better second test.) And if those don't help identify the problem, perhaps turning off the Rosetta screensaver and seeing if it is contributing to the problems on your system. (By eating up more ram than usual, it may be causing the main Rosetta application to use defective ram that hasn't been used on other projects or WUs that didn't have an error.)

If the hardware (ram and hard drive tests) passes, there was mention of the screen saver having problems with some systems. (It'd help to identify your video card and video driver version if that ends up being the problem.)

If you've been following the F@H GPU saga for the past few years, you'll remember that it started with nVidia cards - which were considered the most powerful at the time. They finally abandoned nVidia development and went ATI due to cards like the x1800 being setup with enough shader engines with 32 bit precision to make the job relatively easy. Mr. Houston also mentioned that nVidia is using a technique to hide latency that also caused problems for the GPU code.
When nVidia switches approaches - then we'll likely see the latest nVidia cards being supported. If Intel can switch from Speed-at-all-costs to multiple cores at reasonable speeds with higher instructions per clock - following AMD's lead, then there's hope for nVidia's following ATI's lead.

And yes, I, too, am an nVidiot, not a fanATIc. :)

For the validate section of each of those..

#3 (Matt's) says "workunit error - check skipped."
is that the normal message for a WU turned in after a valid WU?

One of the systems having continuous errors lately ended up being a problem with bad ram. Perhaps others having a high failure rate could test out their system with memtest86+ from http://www.memtest.org/. I remember some of the errors that popped up with Distributed Folding actually telling us to test our systems with memtest86 to verify that our memory was okay.

Are these errors pointing to Rosetta client issues, WU issues, or possible client software/hardware issues?

Have also started to get more failing wu's.
Is there a running log kept of failures to identify a pattern in the making?

Your system seems to be getting more and more failing WUs for each page of 20 results. Running the same hardware tests that were recommended to Zombie67 would help rule out your system as the source of the problem.
We can also post the errors in the "Report problems with 5.32" thread.

Full article here.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- A new test that looks at genetic material from a patient's tumor is 80 percent accurate in predicting which drugs would be most effective against that particular cancer, U.S. researchers reported Sunday.

The test can be used to predict not only whether a single drug can work to stop a tumor but whether a specific combination of drugs will work, the team at Duke University in North Carolina reported.

Writing in the journal Nature Medicine, the researchers said they used a "gene chip" made by Affymetrix as the basis of the test, done in lab dishes using tumor samples from several hundred different patients with leukemia and ovarian, breast and lung cancers.

Interesting way to choose the most effective treatments for your tumors. How much study for other illnesses before a similar approach will work for them?

The G80 had 96 shaders for some models, and 128 shaders for the high end part in the german review I read. Hopefully, they've ironed out the other issues that caused the nVidia chips to perform so poorly over at FaH.

With the competition to provide better crunching between ATI and nVidia, it'll hopefully make any portion of the Rosetta app that is ported to a GPU client just scream along.. if the Rosetta Team gets a GPU coding guru on staff.

Remove the Ram and retest one stick at a time. Stop on the first failure. That module is bad on that particular motherboard. Test any remaining sticks.

Seti, etc must have a smaller memory footprint, and not touch the affected memory area that is bad.

We ran into problems like this when people started working with memory hog software after using their system problem free for a year.

Once should be enough to catch the memory errors; but I leave it running overnight to verify that there aren't any intermittent errors. With the number of errors your WUs are having in less than 3 hours, 1 pass should be enough.

Where does one get Memcheck86+? [...]This is a linux box, will it run on linux?

Argh. It would help if I used the right name for the program. (Memtest86+). I've always used the iso from the linked web page for bootable cds, or floppies. So it doesn't care what OS you have installed on your HD. It's also included on The Ultimate Boot CD 3.4 (although there's probably a newer version out by now.)

Have you tested the hardware with Memcheck86+ and a HD diagnostic from the manufacturer of the HD.. (the whole collection of current manufacturer's HD diagnostics are on the Ultimate boot CD).

And temporarily setting up a clean install of the OS on another HD, install Boinc and let it load a fresh copy of Rosetta - to see if the problem disappears with a clean install?

Since it's getting about 1/10th of what it used to - I'd check for the system going into hibernation mode after 2 hours. Right click on the desktop, choose "properties", choose screen saver, choose advanced, and make sure the hard drive shutdown and system hibernation is set to "never".
