Welcome aboard. I believe you'll find that the project scientists/developers provide alot of feedback to the users here, answering questions and updating everyone on the goals and progress. Happy crunchin'.

Since you are a new Rosetta cruncher I was thinking it was due to your Rosetta benchmarks not being properly established yet.

This is an apparent ghost unit? This particular machine has been running almost 24/7 and never times out.

Don't know if this is important or not but thought I'd put it here anyway.

I wasn't talking to you and my response was in regard to the OTHER poster's politicaly and philosophically based comment. Oh, don't make unwarranted assumptions about my political views..

Ifyou want to defend a political philosophy that spreads misery and deaths of countless millions I'm sure you can find another thread to do that.
46) Message boards : Cafe Rosetta : Navy Teams??? (Message 14464)
Posted 23 Apr 2006 by R/B
Post:
At present there are two Navy teams listed in the Rasetta@home community. (1) is U.S.Navy with 33 members and is ranked #114. (2) is US NAVY with 16 members and is ranked #152.

Is it possible for the two teams to join together? I just joined the (1) team as it has more members and more credits.

Will the founders of these teams consider joining their teams as one group? Together we present a stronger force to overcome any other military group.

If I remember correctly the founder of one of those teams can't be found yet so they can't get the email addresses to contact eachother with to merge the two. Somebody was talking about this about 2- 3 months ago or so.

Robert, do you think that dismissing the issue and referring to Marx or Khmer Rouge will help convince the people who have the reservations quoted in the first message? (that fellow was actually quoting the text from the profile of another cruncher)

Have you tried to "recruit" people to crunch for life-science projects?

Look at the forums of WCG or UD's CureCancer or FAH projects and you'll notice that the issue of intellectual property and public availability of any results is a high priority for many people. Have a look here, here. One could fill pages with similar stuff.

Have I tried to recruit others to the project? Yes. I also have a team of about 47 members (small team, but alive) that I started with SETI and am waiting to bring over to Rosetta once the 'tell a friend' idea and the 'letter to inactive members' is completed. You should know this fact if you remembered many of my posts regarding that effort and contributions to it.

--------------

As for the rest of what you have to say.....sometimes being very direct with people is the morally proper way to address them. Regarding the original poster, his comments are, in my view, too similar to idealogies that have left a great burden of misery on humanity. So, no, I don't think those 'tactics' are too brutal. When someone tells me/us/you/them that they consider to NOT help with research searching for potential cures to diseases BECAUSE someone down the line might make a $ you need to question that person's mindset.

Feet1st, I honestly think the next step should be for Dr. Baker or associates to go out and do interviews. Maybe he doesn't have a good radio voice or speaking ability. Maybe he's fantastic. Regardless, I want to reiterate these ideas I originally suggested focusing upon direct PR. Right to the people. People don't know what Rosetta is or that it even exists. Several of us have suggested different media outlets that would probably be amenable to a small telephone interview. To me, this is an immediate idea that fosters not only current crunch power but also the future growth as you pointed out in another post about how every user grows hosts. It's a bit like having a mutual fund or a savings account. Every bit earned NOW means there's alot more being earned tomorrow. I feel like we are overlooking the obvious and I admit, I have no knowledge of what the internal circumstances are within the project. Think, radio shows that have millions of listeners....CNN Saturday program. Canadian outlets, etc....

Just wait until I get my dedicated Pentium II up and running! ;-)

Has anyone thought of approaching the CDC (Center for Disease Control) to get their machines crunching? I know that getting a contact that is agreeable within governments is difficult if not impossible but if this idea were to be successful it would be a great boon to the effort. It would probably take Dr. Baker or someone of his stature and credibility to actuaclly make this happen. Think of the PR value of having the CDC actually helping the project...

It's not like we are being asked to devote our computer time to producing a cheesier cheese doodle or a crunchier potato chip, guys. I hope I've gotten through to a couple of folks here. I mean, how can one truly argue against someone who incorporates 'cheese doodle' in his arguments? :-)

Pardon my ignorance about your game but I've heard alot about it and was wondering if it requires one to buy a CD to play online or if it is credit card based or what? If it's only net based what's the official site(s)?
Thanks.

Oh my God! You mean someone might actually produce something of value to cure diseases and thus eventually earn income from it!? Why don't we just all become Marxists instead so that what we consume never ends up producing anything greater than the raw materials used to produce it? The Khmer Rouge had a wonderfully well working plan based on THAT premise. Give me a break!

You know, homicide detectives make a 'profit' in their capacity as policemen. I guess they're just capitalizing on other people's tragedies. We should fire them all until they volunteer to work for free.

Do you want the progress toward the cures of these diseases advanced or not? What a bunch of hoakem....

Please, someone just ship this guy their copy of unused win 95/98 that they are no longer using (this way it doesn't violate laws and so forth) ?

I mean, It's 1$ worth of U.S. postage. Make it happen, guys. I've got one copy of 98 and it would violate copyright law to send it to the poor guy.

Thanks, but I just rebooted the machine and tried again and it reported normally. I suppose I should have tried that first before making a post.
