21) Message boards : Rosetta@home Science : 10 reasons I crunch R@H and you should too (Message 16748)

Here's a top 5....

5. It's the most cutting edge science ever seen that ordinary people can contribute to.

4. It will ultimately help those in my own family.

3. The Scientists communicate and respond to the entire group of volunteers.

2. Good natured contributors come together and form their own communities...

1. Well, 'Gosh, darnit!'....It just makes you feel good....

I've looked this over..and pardon my ignorance (perhaps others have questions like mine also) but can someone elaborate on these tables more and explain? Thanks.....
23) Message boards : Rosetta@home Science : Rosetta@home needs more publicity... (Message 16454)

I am already giving full dual cpu time 24hours a day.

Yep, that is great. Keep it up. :Thumbsup here: But it is not quite what I meant.

I dont want to get too off topic here as this thread is about publicity for Rosetta. I see you have a 3 hour setting set in preferences which is producing anything from 1 to 6 models for that 3 hour run on the Casp jobs. What I was wondering was would it be helpful to have more or less models per job by adjusting the run time during Casp ? Or does it not matter either way ?

I would recommend a bit longer wu setting (~8hr) if everything is running smoothly on your computer to reduce net traffic a bit. thanks, David

Dr. Baker, what would you say would be an optimal goal of increased data crunching for Rosetta? I know that there is probably no amount that is enough but for the CASP7 goals what would be ideal? 2X what terraflops we're pulling in now? %20 more?

Thanks for all you're doing to get the form letter configured. I check in here every couple of days or so to see if it's up yet. I'm looking forward to moving alot of my team out of inactive status and crunching for Rosetta once this is prepared. Thanks again.
25) Message boards : Rosetta@home Science : R@H attempting all CASP7 targets? (Message 16012)
Posted 12 May 2006 by R/B
Post:
With three targets out already, is the hope to submit answers for all of them? Or are some targets focused on areas the Rosetta folks don't work on?

we are going to do all of them!

When this is all done, and Rosetta results are in that we all hope are monumentally successful, I hope the mechanisms and plans are already in place to ensure that maximum press coverage is afforded the project. Interviews all over the science websites, major media outlets like CNN, BBC, etc.

If the enthusiasm of the developers and scientists of this project is any indicator of the liklihood of success then capitalizing on that outcome will be extraordinarily easy.

ps Has the lab's cupboards been stocked with champagne yet? :-)

laurelin, we got way off topic there on you. It looks like all you have left is the narration for that first "intro. to folding" video? I can't wait to have the complete picture of what you are illustraiting there.

Any update on the other video projects?

Laura has been filming us for the rosetta@home video--and some of us are learning how bad we are on camera, myself included!

Remember the first time you ever heard your own voice on a tape recorder? Most people think to themselves, 'Do I REALLY sound like that!?'. People are overly critical when viewing themselves from a 3rd person point of view.

I'm betting it will all turn out alot better than you think it will, at least from the point of view of those people viewing it. Looking forward to seeing it.

I think alot of people that do boinc projects are accustomed to seing the uotd at the tops of the pages so moving it might break this familiarity. One thing I like about boinc projects is that most pages are layed out identically or nearly so, making navigation 'intuitive'.

This may be a bit off topic perhaps. But I try not to make new threads. Why have none of my machines downloaded the latest Rosetta client? One d/l a new unit a few hours ago but it's still the old version. Furthermore, one unit seems to be sticking and the messages say it is operating on the earliest deadline first premise. Mainly though I'm interested in why my machines haven't d/l the newest version yet.

Are you running a large queue? My machines connect about every 2 hours and the 5.07 application came down within 4 hours of the deployment with the first new Work Unit that arrived. However, my queue was empty. In any case you will get it sooner or later, because the 5.06 application is no longer being sent out, and eventually you will run out of 5.06 work.

Well, the machine I'm on now is 5.07 but the machine in question is still 5.01. It is a dialup and I just manually turned in another completed unit. Since it is on dialup I naturally have it set to 24 hour crunch time. It's not sticking now apparently. I was just curious because about 12 hours ago it d/l a casp 6 unit under 5.01. Doesn't really matter to me I suppose as long as it's doing 'its thing'. Thanks, Mod9.

There's a 3rd machine but I haven't checked it yet. I can look at that one later.

Humm i dont have a top 10 but here is a thouhgt. My main reason for doing this is to help increase our understanding of protiens and how they can be used to make the human condistion better for all of us. Would be super to see a cure or a drug that would help the suffering that is going on throught the world. But thna agian even if we never find any of those great things just the work that we do here will help out some where else in the future

A bit like the user of the day profiles except with more direct questions put to the user? I like that.

Jonathan, any word on when this will be linked to the Rosetta main page? Thanks. I look forward to sending it out to all 48 or so members of my BOINC team. Most are in Seti and I wish to get some migration going. Not to mention the fact that over half have grown inactive over time.

Hmmmm.....logic 101.

Don't contradict yourself.

I didn't ! Please try to read carefully what I wrote. I said: "...they could TRY to sell the drug ... but so could their competitors who did not do human testing". If you try to sell something, it may happen that no one will buy your product at the price you need to charge to recoup your upfront costs (you could still sell the product at a lower price but would end up with a loss), the reason being that your competitors didn't have those upfront expenses in the first place (no human testing) and so will make a profit even at the lower price.

Capitalism 101... ;-)

Oh ok. I understand better what you meant now. Thanks for the clarification.

[quote]Latest updates are in "Project significance" section (text + image).

Also, I think it'd be nice to include info about

1/ the need for volunteer resources (vs using public resources) mentioning the 5Million CPU hours on BlueGene awarded for 2006
2/ Rosetta accuracy (split the CASP results graph along with some graphs from TopPredictions page)
3/ Some info on the science team (?)
4/ Clean up the "Features and Issues" section at the end
