61) Message boards : Number crunching : Removal of posts containing offensive language (Message 9929)

I find it somewhat ironic that the very language that you use to explain offensive language would itself be considered offensive to many. The imagery of "mates...fishing" vs. "mixed company" directly implies quite strongly that women are to be protected from some sort of language that they are not equipped to handle. I realize that the number of women participating is much lower than the number of men (based on a BOINCStats.com poll), but if some of them are offended by being portrayed as such fragile beings, are you prepared to police yourself(or is sexist langauge not considered offensive...it is difficult to discern when there is no general forum policies document to consult and a moderator has, to at least a minor degree, used it in a post)?

I dont see anything there that is sexiest to women other than the way your mind has pictured what the mod has said

My post was deleted not for offensive language as was stated but for objecting to carl.h and his high handed manner. I am not surprised, scientists make their living begging rich people for money. A high RAC means lots of machines and carl and the FADs choose to use that to control this project. The mods mean to suck up to him and his cronies. I don't have enough RAC to be allowed a disenting opinion and I am too stiff necked to put up with that. I have set my computers to 'no new work' for FAD(formerly rosetta)@home and will detach from this project when current work is done.

I leave this place forever!

I can see this place getting quite messy in the coming weeks with people leaving due to heavy handed Mods be it intentionally or by accident but lets hope it doesn't drive too many out

Why doesn't this forum have the option to report a particular thread like over on the SETI boards?? then at least someone could report something offensive straight from the guilty post

Also Janus is rewriting forum code over @BURP so maybe that could be implemented over here when he has finished it all

Obviously I can't promise you won't see this kind of thing again. In fact I can almost assure you that you will. I am sorry if this has caused a problem.

Not a problem for me but I think it may become a problem a board that is heavily regulated like that where a Mod goes through and starts removing stuff is due to get some backlash I dont mind posts been removed because they have words in that shouldn't be used but for any other reason that I think will cause a problem

The entire forums have gone to pot people back stabbing, small minded & petty, arguing and making this place a horrible place to come to I rarely visit here any more as can't be bothered trudging through a war zone.

And also moderators removing messages that don't need to be removed. I had a message today to say a post of mine from 62 days ago had been removed as it was off topic!! As to why it was off topic I do not know, as my reply was to someone letting them know I couldn't view the webpage they were talking about and would try later.

I think it would be a bad idea to start putting loads of different sections in this works fine as it is now, easy to see what posts are in without having to jump all over the place to find and view posts.

Well as screen burn no longer really exsists anymore why would the screensaver need to move lightly to protect the screen??

If anything it would be more like a linux client that would run on them,I can't see Microsoft doing this at all.

there has already been a linux operating system that can work on modded Xbox clients so maybe one will be released for Xbox 360

It just doesn't work when left in Memory I know that as had held in memory a long time ago and the computer just sulks, my easy option is to switch every 10hrs all the WU's are getting done with no errors and all get done before there deadline on this setting so thats not an issue with me, when I finally upgrade my comp I will leave in memory but for now I won't

Dgnuff I know perfectly well how BOINC works and I know what swap space is so there is no need to stick something in Bold and CAPS to me

To all the people who are having a go about countless new versions there is no need to update if your client works properly already, the fixes are for new users who are unable to connect to the server. Stick with your current version and just await BOINC 6.x.x no doubt that is just around the corner

Why is it not possible to keep them in memory? You're running Win XP, so within a few moments of being suspended, the WU will be flushed from physical ram (chip) to the swap file, and left there for the duration.

Are you short of swap space or something?

I don't run XP at all I have Win 2000, I also run many multiple projects, there wouldn't be enough memory available to hold all of the projects in memory

Have just altered my settings to tell BOINC to switch every 10 hrs that way I can still crunch Rosetta without and errors when switching, it is currently impossible for me to keep in memory.

hope this problem with checkpointing/switching is found soon

Where would one find the info that would need posting when a WU gives an error I'm just used to looking at my messages tab so where else does BOINC store that info, coz no doubt in 45 minutes I will need to post an error log

They don't seem to have confirmed it yet as the next reccommended version although the link to 5.2.10 shows the new changes since 5.2.10 so just looks like rom or whoever forgot to link 5.2.11 to that page
