I just reattached and I think I'll settle in for awhile. It's nice and peaceful over here and the project is well administered.

I have no problems with the optimized clients. The Boinc V5.x.x releases are designed to work with the widest possible amount of different CPU's out on the market. An optimized client is CPU specific, whether it be mmx, sse, sse2, sse3, etc. It would be nice if Boinc were dispensed in a variety of flavors, rather than plain vanilla, one size fits all.

THe only thing that an optimized BOINC client does is speed up the benchmarks. It will make no appreciable difference in the running of applications. Optimized Science Applications is where you make money with optimization.

So, though you don't have to take my word for it, there is no gain to be made in making multiple BOINC Client versions. The only place optimization gives you gains is when you have a lot of repitition ... like in the science applications.

Most of the activities in the BOINC client are "linear" with little looping.

One thing to take into account is take HT CPU benchmarks are improperly low with the generic client.

This is the optimized client. I think it is javalizard.

That link has the optimized clients AND the optimized applications - but the javalizard one is quite old, and not the fastest. The alpha apps right above it are much, much faster. Note that those clients are 4.44, NOT 5.x - I would NOT recommend using the clients, only the applications.

Well, I don't _want_ to chase you off, but you know as well as I do that a new version of the app isn't going to happen in a few hours, and maybe not even in a few days. If you're getting nothing but errors, I really would recommend going on to another project, then coming back later. (Or maybe putting just the G5 on Einstein, where it really shines, even though that's not your normal approach.) There's just no point in spending the G5 CPU time for nothing - it's not helping the project, as they have to reissue the WU, and it's not helping your credits. Obviously your P4's are fine, I just hate to see a G5 either "sitting idle", or throwing trash, when it _should_ be the star of your farm.

I took your suggestion and my PowerMac is now 90% Einstein@Home ...

Still puzzled why my run times for SETI@Home stink so badly (2.5 hours plus) when my Xeon can do them in and hour 20 min ... and I am using the altivec Team MacNN's client (not the best one??) ...

That's weird, my PowerMac with the MacNN client took 72 minutes on average to crunch Seti with an optimized app. I've come to the conclusion that the client is not the problem with Rosetta Mac crunching, but lies with the app.

On Mac's it appears to me not to be the core client but rather the problem is somewhere in the application. I'm a little curious about all the compressed files in>library>application support>Boinc Data>Projects>boinc.bakerlab.org_rosetta> on a G5 using the BM 5.2.13. The same thing also applied when using v4.44.

It appears to me that the Rosetta app works in a totally different fashion than some of the other project apps? I must admit that I'm a little lost.

Now that someone has said that they're working on a functional client, I'll stick around and bide my time.
I'm like Poorboy. I find it rather frustrating at this point in time that Mac's are still treated like unwanted, redheaded, step childs within the community. So, I'll hang loose for awhile. I guess that I'm having the adult version of a temper tantrum.

What's even worst is having to trash WU's!

I've got the same problem with the current Mac client, runs for about 8 hours then gives a client error.

I just joined Rosetta a few days ago. My PC's are OK with R&H but my PowerMac G5 2.5 runs the WU's for about the same time as a 600MHz Celeron, then error out. I was using a superbench mark 4.44 client. I then uninstalled it, trashing numerous Seti work units which were hung up with Berkeley's servers BS, and installed the current Mac client. The same thing it happening.

I don't do mixed projects; I crunch only one project exclusively at a time. If I can't get this fixed soon, I'll migrate all my hosts to some other project. My Mac is my pride and joy, if it can't be in on the project, nothing will. I was looking forward to the change from Seti, I'd heard a lot of good things about this project, but this is not working.

Looks like my Rosetta WU crunches are erroring out since Nov 19th.

Mac G5 dual OSX 10.39, with BOINC Superbench menubar 4.44

I've got a PowerMac G5 2.5 running OS10.4.3 and I got the same thing with the Super Bench Manager.
I uninstalled that client and downloaded the current OS X client and I'm getting the same thing. The WU keeps crunching and crunching for 7 or more hours then fails with client error.
<core_client_version>4.44</core_client_version> <message>Maximum CPU time exceeded </message> <stderr_txt> # ===================================== # random seed: 824341 # ===================================== </stderr_txt>

If I cant get this fixed, I'll have to move this hosts to another project.

I have a PowerMac G5 2.5 running OS10.4.3 (Tiger). I just recently attached it to the R@H project. With the exception of one WU, all the rest are returning invalid results.

Result ID 2969880 <core_client_version>4.44</core_client_version> <message>Maximum CPU time exceeded </message> <stderr_txt> # ===================================== # random seed: 824341 # ===================================== </stderr_txt>

Result ID 2969872
core_client_version>4.44</core_client_version> <message>Maximum CPU time exceeded </message> <stderr_txt> No heartbeat from core client for 31 sec - exiting # ===================================== # random seed: 1213841 # ===================================== No heartbeat from core client for 31 sec - exiting # ===================================== # random seed: 290541 # ===================================== </stderr_txt>

These are examples. The host ID# is 88311.

It also appears that most of the project files as compressed, and a few are uncompressed. WTF!
I am running a with a superbenchmark client 4.44.

Edit: I have since uninstalled the previous client and reinstalled the Mac Boinc client 5.2.13. I'll see how that goes. I also merged the host computer which is now ID# 90341.

So consider this posting a heads up info only.

I just joined Rosetta, so I'm kinda new around here. Once I stomp on my team mate,
Laughingboy, over at Seti, I plan to bring all of my hosts over here to Rosie's.
In the mean time, my PowerMac will have to do. Treat me gently, I'm a virgin.

36) Message boards : Number crunching : Is anyone running Mac G4 dual with BOINC 5.2.13? (Message 5160)

I just came aboard Rosetta with a PowerMac G5 2.5 OS10.4.3
I'm sharing it with Seti at this moment without any problems
at all. However, I had the 5.2.13 client, which worked fine,
and I've currently changed it to a modified client. Again,
without any issues.

But you make no mention of which OS you're running? I believe
there are some minor problems with ealier OS's. Are you running
the Manager, Menubar, or CLI Terminal client?

Your MacNN team board would probably be your best source of help
and info. IMHO
