1) Message boards : Number crunching : Not getting any new tasks (Message 62197)

I also don't geet work from Rosetta for several days now. I keep updating manually but always get the answer:
Sun 12 Jul 2009 06:52:27 AM CEST rosetta@home Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks

I do run multiple projects, Seti being the largest and it is running fine. I did crunch for Einstein but found out I got WU's which were crunched at a very low speed, sometimes taking more than 12 hours with almost no CPU power used. So I detached Einstein.
Rosetta doesn't give me new WU's and that's not good. What can I do to get some work again?
2) Message boards : Number crunching : Enlarge Boinc manager window at start-up (Message 59767)

Theres a config file for boinc manager in your users home folder, unhide hidden files and edit the file ".BOINC Manager", edit the values Width and Height, you'll find them close to the top of the file.

You have to open the Boinc Manager to start crunching? From your hosts list it looks like a Ubuntu kernel and since that is Debian based its better to just use the repos to install Boinc as a daemon, it will then start crunching at boot, no need to open boincmgr or even log in.

Thank you for your help, but unfortunately it doesn't work. I can set the width as you mentioned, but the next time I open the manager, it's back to its original size.

Yes, I do use Ubuntu but I start it automatically. How to set it up as a daemon which starts automatically?

Thanks.

Hi, since I do switch of the computer because of electricity saving measurements, I also have to switch it on again. After that do start the Boinc manager and start crunching.
Every time I start the manager it opens in a pretty small window. I can not see all I want to see. Is there a way to open it with a larger size, so I don't have to enlarge it by hand?
Is it something I can do myself, or is it baked into the program and can not be changed so easily?
I do use the Linux 6.6.4 version of the Manager.
Who knows his/her way around in the program?
4) Message boards : Number crunching : Cpu benchmarks (Message 59559)

The benchmarks don't provide very much information. If you move the mouse or have any background tasks, the benchmarks will chage every time you run them.

Don't be concerned about the benchmarks, just get back to folding. Every min. of CPU time helps the project.

Yes, it is true that the values differ every time you run the test, but that is not the answer to the original question: which one is more important, floating or integer mips.
Does anyone know this? I also like to know the answer.
Thanks.

5) Message boards : Number crunching : SERVER PROBLEMS. (Message 58446)

Post:
It is not just a matter of starting a job. The reason they are inactive is because the queue of tasks is apparently empty. "so fill the queue"... yes, I'm sure they will. Until then, there isn't any work unless tasks pass deadlines, or report failures.

When will there be new work?

2 days ago I started Rosetta@Home, merely to have my computer doing something. Seti@Home ran dry because of a server problem which took like forever to be fixed (I'm sure the guys at Berkely did all they could do but sometimes it just takes a while). Now I am almost out of work at Rosetta as well.
Does this happen often? I mean do I have to set my workbuffer at a large amount of days to be able to keep doing work, without running dry? What are your experiences?

6) Message boards : Number crunching : Optimized versions (Message 58416)

Post:
Hi,
I have been crunching for Seti@Home for one year now and have used an optimized version of the crunching program. This results in much higher performance.
I was wondering if Rosetta@Home also has an optimized version? At the moment I see in my Rosetta Projects folder the following files:
minirosetta_1.47_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu
minirosetta_graphics_1.40_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu
rosetta_beta_5.98_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu
Are these files the "normal" programs to be used or is there an optimized version among them already? Btw, which program does what?

There are no optimized apps as code base is changed very often.Although one can request source code for rosseta and make optim. app it would be in next months replaced by newer version with core calculation bit different and entire optimization could be done again...

This is as far as my memory goes.So this project uses "raw" power of processor and nothing more.

Okay, thank you for your answer.
Making my own version from the source code is impossible since I know absolutely nothing about programming and have no intention to learn this.
7) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Windows to Linux (Message 58410)

Getting less impressed with W XP by the day so seriously thinking of switching to Linux. Q is--
Which version is best for BOINC/Rosetta and are there any known probs or snags?

AMD4800 64 dual core. 4GB RAM
Sorry to young Billy.G

I myself use Ubuntu 8.04 for one year now and I like it very much. I have tried other Linux distributions but Ubuntu is the one I like best. It has a great community to find help and support, it installs easy, it runs very stable: never had any problem with it.
Hope this helped.

9) Message boards : Number crunching : Rising time to completion (Message 58387)

Post:
Jan, Rosetta actually allows you to configure the target runtime you would prefer. This is done in the Rosetta preferences on the website (not the general preferences).

It is a target, not an absolute.

When you first get started, the default is currently a 3 hours runtime target. And BOINC's benchmarks and etc. are used to get an initial guess at the runtime. Yours was 3.5 hours. But if you've set your target higher, then this will be what actually gets used. BOINC will then, in retrospect, see the actual runtime and use that in future estimates of runtime.

You may have set your target higher then the 3 hours, and so Rosetta knows it is likely to run longer, but BOINC has to "see" it happen.

It will settle down once you complete a few tasks.

Thank you for the explanation. I guess I just have to wait a while to see things stabilize.

Hi, I just started Rosetta and the first thing I noticed is the fairly long time it takes to finish a work unit. But, that's not all. I am used to smaller WU's with Seti@Home.

I now see that the time to completion is not decreasing but increasing. Units start with 3.30.00 h and now, after having done 5%, the time to completion has gone up to 5 h.
Can somebody please explain that to me?

I run Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and rosetta_beta_5.98_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu crunching program.
