21) Message boards : Number crunching : New build aftermarket fan compatibility (Message 73196)

Im about to buy a server 1155 motherboard xeon, but am unsure if the aftermarket cooler (StarTech FAN1156PWM) is compatible. I know that its 1155, the thing is I had a quad core am3 fan that didnt work on another one of my computers that was bulldozer(am3+), so im kinda confused. I know it wasnt the same socket*, but it did install just didnt keep it cool enough I guess. So the startech cooler im looking at has the highest airflow but it says its for the i series cpu. Will it keep work with xeon. I really hate intel cpu fans, there a pain, but as long as an aftermarket works it shouldnt be a problem. I assume the motherboard comes with a backplate, I already have a i7 920 and i took the fan off to see how if it had a backplate and it was saudered in. Looks like theyre all saudered on the intel boards anyways. Also Ive looked at a few build videos on youtube and I dont trust the stock fan. So basically my i7 screws into the motherboard and I want to buy one exactly the same as its so easy. Should it matter what kinda cpu as long as you have the socket right, cause I did mix am3 with am3+ and it was no go, I figure thats where I went wrong. fans on newegg if you want to look at it.

is there a large structural difference as far as number crunching goes with the phenom vs i7. Ive heard about floating point math or something like that that handles all the math on amd procesors, is this still the case? I googled and couldnt find a difference so I will ask. I would be able to do alot more with amd.

yes i am aware of the 100 percent usage setting issue and took that into consideration, i still have the same problem.

i made a previous post about my fan going crazy but that was me not communicating very well as that was what i was hearing and in fact looking at the cpu usage it was jumping around. I have the same problem on malaria control, so im on world community grid right now, was on docking.

its a dektop but it didnt use to make the sounds, i just found how popular world community grid is and it doesnt do the same thing to my cpu, also folding@home doesnt do it either.

CPU usage seems to stay at 100 but the noises its making make me think somethings wrong. It didnt used to do this, is something wrong or is it normal?

so yea that would be fine except it doesnt listen to a thing i say. Like trying to cut down on the ram to make up for the processor. So its just running on 90% for some strange reason. set to 100. piece of junk i mean i guess they might have found a cure for schizophrenia but then they confuse me by coming out with 2 at the same time. sqeeker mc sqeekn sqeek

Does wattage and socket make them compatible or are there other factors that im not seeing.

OK, so im doing my first build. is wattage and socket all that you have to worry about when adding a 9950 cpu? cause they recently lowered the wattage on 9950s to 125, yet i still see boards that only support say 9700 series say here for cpu http://cgi.ebay.com/AMD-Phenom-X4-9950-BLACK-EDITION-4mb-2-6GHz-AM2-125W_W0QQitemZ250317767608QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item250317767608&_trkparms=72%3A1424%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A3%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

i was just wondering the difference in the number crunching device that was in the cpu. I mean if its not gonna make a difference or is it. with the price taken into consideration. quad core should be better i think. and i plan on getting a couple 9950s but eh i could go cheap. intel chips are to exspensive.
