1) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : Ubuntu 20.4 BOINC 7.16.6 "task suspended -computer in use" lasts forever... (Message 97295)

Just installed Ubuntu 20.4 LTS, fresh install of BONIC from software repository BOINC 7.16.6 and it seems that this is buggy beyond belief. First it started to ignore all preferences and began running all of the time ignoring the "wait 5 minutes" until starting option. Then it reverted back to using the preferences correctly only this time it will not run at all and simply stays in the "suspended - computer in use" scenario. Please advise.

Thanks for the fix, worked on Windows 10 BOINC 7.16.5.

Question is after having edited the file in such a way what exactly are we doing in terms of certifications? It would be nice if some project admins would clarify, or offer an ability to replace said file here at the Rosetta site. Also does the edit affect other projects, if so is it negatively?

Do not like the idea of meddling with files, I am not exactly clueless but I don't usually do such things.

Antony

Over and over again. I excluded the directory Rosetta and BOINC resided in for virus scanning

That will exclude them from the virus scanning, but not necessarily from the real-time protection. So when they start up (or try to access the Internet), the AV may block them. And using FOUR is asking for trouble. They are probably tripping all over each other as they try to inspect the same file or operation.

I use at most one virus scanner, and sometimes not even that. I have had to re-install operating systems more than once because of disk corruption due to AVs, but never due to viruses.

(And if you don't want malware, don't install it. It usually does not install itself.)

I usually do not intentionally install any malware at all intentionally, but I am aware that even the best companies in the world get data breaches and succumb to hackers. Who knows what mischief or havoc they can wreak? And you are correct in stating that for the most part AV companies usually end up causing more trouble than anything. Just by way of a FYI I utilize only one at any given time, been around computers long enough to know that more than that you are absolutely asking for trouble.

Back to the matter at hand thanks for your quick reply to further clarify my earlier statement I excluded the BOINC directories from both On-Demand, and On-Access scanning. The question remains will Rosetta be able to pick up the pieces of these WU's or will they continue to be exiting with zero status?

Greetings and salutations to all, I have returned from a long hiatus to crunch again only to discover that I have issues with the current series of WU's. The error occurs in my log ,

"2/9/2019 4:07:55 PM | Rosetta@home | Task 6e4b0e7fd95166052a88f46c94a20bb8_0001_fold_SAVE_ALL_OUT_763858_3_0 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
2/9/2019 4:07:55 PM | Rosetta@home | If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project."

Over and over again. I excluded the directory Rosetta and BOINC resided in for virus scanning so I don't think that could be the problem? Although I am not to thrilled about that. I am totally against malware in general and do not wish to harbor it in any capacity. I realize that Rosetta still will grant credit even for failed WU's but from a scientific aspect I hate the idea of shooting blanks that have no meaning. I am all about the science!! Feedback/help appreciated, and thank you.

Actually something I have noticed on a personal level is that when you leave the PC run 24/7 it seems to operate better as opposed to cold starting it. So to me it is more beneficial to leave it on and contribute to a project of choice rather than the latter.

Also with the overheating issues I would like to say that it is problematic at best to ask people to download a seperate program such as threadmaster to minimize any potential overheating issues. I think that perhaps a better solution would be to merge this idea with the BOINC program, or project preferences itself. I mean the average Joe PC user is likely not going to want to become that deeply involved with a project to that degree. BOINC IMO should be the be all, do all 1 stop shop.. Again MO's.

Power consumption is minimal for these newer advanced systems. The average power supply rates at about 200-1000 WATTS. The 350 WATT PSU is about on par with running 6 60 WATT bulbs. To me that is not too taxing on an average electric bill, depending of course on how many PC's one uses and the amount of time run.

Security should always be a priority with projects, from the email address' to the BOINC client itself. Project leadership should not overlook this at all, the moment something nasty is found with either the BOINC client, or the project WU's it is over. I personally would not look favorably upon a lax attitude in this area.

Network bandwidth only matters to dialup users, as I have graduated to the better broadband movement I have found this issue to be non-existent anymore. Lastly the hard disk drive problems can be solved with the prefrences as was stated before. Although what I opted to do when building my almighty cruncher was I decided on a server class HDD, one which is designed for heavy usage.

Just adding ideas and ranting / rambling as usual. :)

I also am experiencing no issues with 5.70 BETA being recognized as a trojan by AV software. I use G DATA AV, on access scanner would have picked it up if it were nastily coded methinks?

Now that is an easy one to answer and can be summed up in two words for me, cure disease! I had various family members that have been afflicted with the various diseases mentioned here and if donating my PC's cpu time can help then so be it. Nuff said. Also as I have said I have decided to crunch exclusively for Rosetta now. SETI and I do not mix well these days.

Well good luck and godspeed,

Just throwing a few brain storms out there, but has the Rosetta@home project heads considered talking to various hospitals and what not? I am sure that they would love to donate their computers to this project. It is after all related in a manner. Just one idea. Also any feedback on Playstation 3? Those guys at Folding@Home stated that they saw a dramatic jump in TFLOPS thanks to it. I heard talk of X-Box 360 somewheres hearabouts.

One more thing would be the possibility of integrating it with a Google toolbar for Internet Explorer, or Yahoo toolbar similar to what Folding@Home did. Really can't go into dirty details as I have always been I BOINCer meself. Just another possibility. Basically the word needs to get out, the project sells itself basically so its the introduction that is the greatest challenge, and even that is not a challenge.

Just a few thoughts to share.

I must emulate the sentiments of my fellow crunching colleagues that have stated the 10 reasons before me.

Would like to add some for myself, I crunch for Rosetta because I believe in this project wholeheartedly. Of the many plethora of distributed computing projects available this I believe is the most important. Therefore I have decided to throw my computing might, limited as it may be :), to this project. May God bless your efforts and the cures be found speedily for the terrible afflictions that plague the world today. Long and prosperous life to you all. May it be blessed.

The ability to delete an account no matter what the project. Should be a user controlled issue anyway, also could make it a one stop shop via BOINC software. Would make it easier.

And while I am here posting away I too did like the Empire Strikes back. Especially the part where Luke finds out that Darth Vader is really his father. That was a shocker..! Liked all of the other originals too.

The new ones, well some of them I enjoyed. Episode 1 was not my fav, liked Episode 3 the best personally. Learned more about the Sith and how Vader became Vader, although I thought the story behind that was rather lame. Always imagined that Vader was the one who killed all the Jedi. And the mask was an attempt to conceal his identity when doing so, and prolong his life years later. Kind of like a mobile in suit life support system if you will which in all actuality was its purpose in the film :)

Only my opinions.

And if your reading this and didn't see 'em my apologies for the spoiler.
