This means you can't connect to the daemon with a blank password (unless you've configured it that way); try going to /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg, your password is a random string that lives in that file. Under Advanced > Select Computer in boincmgr, insert localhost for Host name, and the password above for the password, and it should connect.
