21) Message boards : Number crunching : Why only one task running at the same time with Rosetta Python project 1.03 VBOX64 ? (Message 103607)

Post:
I checked the RAM setting in the running VM and it was set at 6144Mb. (6Gb). There may be different sizes of VMs by the project.
We really don't know what Rosetta@home has planned to fit inside the Python / VirtualBox tasks. They may have ran some VM images elsewhere and 6 - 8 Gb may have been needed.

Added link to completed work unit showing RAM assigned to VM

The two computers listed under your name have 16Gb of RAM. The Virtual Box version of the app is using about 6Gb of RAM for the virtual machine, one cpu.
If you don't need Virtual Box for any other Boinc projects, you can uninstall it and run just regular Boinc projects fine.

I am on Windows 10. I am able to list running Boinc VMs using the VBoxManage commands. Do you have to be part of a user group or certain user on Linux to see the VMs?

The stuck tasks will restart after 24 hours. You would have to check the error logs in Boinc to see why they got stuck. The vbox wrapper losing communication is a common problem, at least on Windows machines.

ProDigit, are you sure you don't have an 'app_config.xml' created? You talk about it in a previous thread.

Try exiting boinc and all tasks. Edit your Boinc preferences on the project to use 8 cpus out of 24. Roughly 33%. Start up Boinc.

I am hoping that is enough info for someone from the project to look into your computers. They may be able to populate the missing CPU info and allow you to merge them. I don't know what other info is tied to each computer on the back end that allow or doesn't allow merging.

All your computers report as "hidden". Your problems has been solved (JOKE)

You could have at least posted links to the computers in question.

An easy fix would be to divide up your projects by computer. One computer runs Rosetta, another runs a second project, etc. You can always add a second project with resource set to zero for a back up in case the primary project runs out of work units or problems.

I noticed you are on Linux. Is the partition where Boinc is storing its files small? Linux may not treat the entire hard disk as one pool but multiple smaller ones. Check your free space per partition?

What do you have set for your computing preferences? How much RAM are you allowing to be used? The tasks should have just went into 'waiting for memory'

Isn't this issue a BOINC problem rather than Rosetta problem? That is just the structure BOINC does.

I just exit Boinc Manager and check the box for stopping all running Boinc tasks.
FILE -> Exit Boinc

This will cleanly stop the tasks and when started again, they take off from the last checkpoints. If you are running Virtual Box tasks, give the computer a minute or two to save those tasks then you can power off or reboot.

I don't think this project uses HTTPS for the communication.
You can go to the actual BOINC forums and check there.

I tried looking at all_projects_list.xml in PROGRAM DATA/BOINC on my windows pc and it looks like a few project use it.
You can search for something like "url>https:" There is a listing for <url> and <web_url>. I am not sure what one is relevant.

I know this is an older post but did you check the server status? Maybe the project was actually down at that time.
