I've had no failures on 3 Windows XP Pro systems I am running, but I finally had to detach from Rosetta on ALL of my Linux systems (I have two running Ubuntu 6.06 and one running Ubuntu 6.10) as I was seeing nearly 90% failure and these systems were offering rosetta 50% of their time. I didn't mind the tasks that ran 10-15 seconds before failing ... - Lynn Lynn: While I don't use Linux for crunching - do these machines run Rosetta fine if they're running Rosetta 100% of the time? We've had better luck with the windows machines if we set the keep in memory setting to yes. Perhaps someone can confirm or deny if that's been a problem with the Linux systems as well. ... I wanted to respond to lynn and bennyrop. I am running ubuntu 6.06. I only have 512MB ram. My situation wasn't exactly the same as lynn's as the work units didn't end after 10-15 seconds. They would run for considerable time. I have run a half dozen or so units and have had failures with all units that have been preempted and removed from memory while running in tandem with worldgrid. At some point I would catch the work units showing no progress and cpu time would no longer increment. I would finally have to abort the units. The two different times that I have suspended worldgrid and run rosetta without interuption I have had no problems. This is a small sample, but I am fairly confident that it isn't just a coincidence but that there is a connection. I'm not going to run both projects simultaneously anymore. I'll alternate between them.

Since moving from xandros to ubuntu I don't have the problem I described. Whether this is something to do with the kernel version or with xandros itself I don't know. I have just tried rosetta again and have been able to complete downloads. I do note that I am still getting some timeout and 500 errors, but ultimately I am getting files. I do not have these timeout issues with worldgrid. I will see whether this persists or whether it appears to be unrelated to what was happening before, but it may be that there is still something going on and that the OS change has somehow lessened the severity of the problem. Boinc version is the same as it was in my previous posts. I'll try to remember to post a follow up after I have had time to see whether the timeout issues are persistent or not. It turned out to be the MTU size... set its value to 576 (dec) for a PPP connection or 1400 (dec) for a DSL mtu on this machine is 552.

Nothing looks troubling to me. Granted this wasn't run near the time of my problem downloading, but I have had this problem over many months of trying at various times.
5) Message boards : Number crunching : Connection problems (Message 17475) Posted 31 May 2006 by finch Post: Everyone keeps talking about this as if it has to be either something on the server end OR something on our end. People seem to forget that this is a very rare problem on our end as well. If it was an obvious problem on my end it would be causing me much more extensive nuisance. I don't think it is a heat issue. I have run this modem for 7 years, in 80+ F mid summer indoor temps downloading hundreds of megabytes of linux distro for 10-12 hours at a time. I'm skeptical as to it being some conscious limit my isp is engaging in. They have always been very hands off, just providing a connection and staying out of my way to let me use it(quite intensively and never a complaint from them. I in turn don't have any significant complaints about them). I have never seen evidence of aggressive controlling behavior in their network management, so I doubt they have been overly zealous in configuring something that is causing trouble. I think it is more likely that there is some subtle interaction of factors at BOTH the server end and my isp that only rarely crops up. If it was simply one OR the other I don't think the issue would be as rare at the server end, if it was a server problem, or as rare at my end, if it was an isp or system problem.

I tried downloading the file with opera. Unfortunately it dies at exactly the same point (actual size of incomplete file is 9,293,312). This is exactly the size downloaded using boinc. The file is supposed to be 9,598,436 correct? Ralph has also tried to download today. I'm getting work units but the file rosetta_beta_5.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu is dying at 96.82% 8.86/9.15. Actual file size for this is 9,293,547. (note it is named beta_5.13, the one for rosetta isn't beta). Otherwise the behavior and error messages are exactly the same. I'll keep an eye on this thread, but I'm going to stick with world grid for now. I can't think of what it could be on my end that could cause this, but I'm not a networking guru either. I may try lhc again in the near future to see if I still have the problem there as well, but my poor dial-up connection has had enough of a work out for the time being :) Anyway if my problem is not related to jean-paul's, after all, I'm sorry for confusing the issue.

Everything else downloads ok and I get most of the application but then it shows a time out, so I am not getting the same error as jean paul. The file shows in boinc manager as 8.86/9.15MB 96.82%. The largest of the other files that download correctly is about 6 1/2 MB. The log shows that it attempts to finish the file, but never progresses beyond this point. Other things were downloading fine in the meantime. aborted the download and let the download begin again. Note that there was a timeout at 6:20 (around 55% complete) because my isp kicked me off, but I reconnected and had no trouble continuing the download at 6:26. Also note the time downloading was shorter because boinc wasn't downloading as many work unit files at the same time. It died at exactly the same point 96.82% 8.86/9.15MB. It simply won't go further at this point, showing reconnecting and then times out over and over. There do not seem to be a significant number of people with this problem because I have never found much on this in forums, newsgroups, etc. I have this problem with lhc and with rosetta. I can run einstein@home and world computing grid(which also uses rosetta) without problems. I can download work units with no trouble. When I try to download the application file for these two projects it craps out at some point. Sometimes at 90+% through the transfer, sometimes as little as 20%. I have tried to deal with this off and on for a year or more using different versions of boinc or newer versions of the application. I have never been able to solve it. Running on xandros and dial-up. Since this doesn't seem to be a common enough problem I think we are out of luck. I am glad to see that you too have found some boinc projects that you can take part in.
