I seem to be having the problem of my computer always running at 100% unless I put boinc on suspend. I run rosetta, seti, and primegrid. (I used to run protiens, and nano@home before, but there out of work it seems) I have set all of them to the same setting, to use no more than 50% which is what I want it at. My computer right now is only using 20% with the normal jump to 30% every once in awhile. That would make the total at 70-80% and not make my cpu fan run like a banshee. I don't know why the boinc program insists on using more than I have limited it too. Is the feature of cpu limited STILL not up yet? did I miss something?

PS: I also tried to use a third party (thread master) but I have no true idea on how it works.......

your an IT intern and you don't know what a usb modem is? very very odd

lol, yea thanks. I thought maybe you where talking about an ethernet to usb adapter....yea, I guess. anyways, wouldn't that slow down the wireless?

Can anyone tell me (in detail) which files I should put into the other computer to get the work units done.

There's always USB or PCI modems you can buy to replace the ethernet socket. Or you could copy the "BOINC" folder from program files to a USB memory stick and then on to an internet connected computer, download work then reverse the process. However, only the internet connected computer will show up on the website stats. It's what I do and is fine if you don't care about credits for specific machines and more about the science being done. If you look at my statsyou will see I appear to have 2 P4 machines. This is the same machine and is the internet connected one. The work gets done on a AMD Athlon64 3000+.

HTH, matt

whats a usb modem?

If I have a computer with a busted ethernet jack, is there still a way to get work units to it? if so, how and once there done how do I upload them?

IF I do get the ethernet jack to work agian, is there a way to hook it up to my laptop and run the internet off the desktop from a wireless laptop?

also, whats the best way to get a laptop to perform for crunching vs. a desktop...and whats the best wasy to get a desktop to perform?

I went ahead and changed the settings to now use 10 GB and keep[ 1 free. i also changed how many days of work it should send so it sends me a smaller packet size. I went ahead and reset the program then closed it shut down and rebooted. I will wait untill it sends me another WU. I also went ahead and tried to tell it to give me work but the server must not want to hand any out to me right now. I dont know what version I am running as well.
the manager tells me that I have more than enough room to run the programs as well.

OH and i also changed "dont use more than "(now)50%" of hard drive space.

guess we will see

alright this is really gay.. I reset the rosetta and these are the messages.

7/20/2007 10:36:44 AM|rosetta@home|Requesting 63 seconds of new work

7/20/2007 10:36:49 AM|rosetta@home|Message from server: BOINC will delete file Fij_bp_AM.dat.gz when no longer needed
7/20/2007 10:36:49 AM|rosetta@home|Got server request to delete file Fij_bp_AM.dat.gz

7/20/2007 10:36:49 AM|rosetta@home|Reason: requested by project

Here are my settings

Use at most 1 GB disk space
Leave at least
(Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored) 1 GB disk space free
Use at most 5% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every 60 seconds
Use at most 50% of page file (swap space)
Use at most
Enforced by version 5.8 and greater 60% of memory when computer is in use
Use at most
Enforced by version 5.8 and greater 70% of memory when computer is idle

which are really strange because I hit edit and I get this

Use at most Gbytes 10
Leave at least 3
(Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored) Gbytes free
Use at most 25% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every 60 seconds
Use at most 80% of page file (swap space)
Use at most
Enforced by version 5.8 and greater 70% of memory when computer is in use
Use at most
Enforced by version 5.8 and greater 70% of memory when computer is idle

Can anyone tell me which one of my boincs are overriding this??
I checked every single one and set them all to the same thing then reset my projects...agian. It still shows up the same

You set your connect to internet every ... days to .01? So you want BOINC to connect 100 times a day? Seems a bit extreme. When you update to the project, it tries to assure you've got enough work to keep you busy until the next time BOINC will connect. Since you told it to connect 100 times a day, it knows it doesn't need to get much work to meet that goal.

Not sure what you mean about w.e. If you want more work on-hand (for example if you know you will turn off your internet access, but have your computer running) then you want to set the "connect to network every ... days" setting to something larger. The default is .1, which is 10 times per day. If you set it to 1.0 then it will attempt to keep a day of work on your computer, once you update to the project to get the settings change down to your machine.

Thanks! my internet is very spotty as it's wireless..I always wanted to know how to get more work for it. Now all I need to do is go change all the settings. is there a way to change that setting from the advanced view or even the simple? I haven't been able to find it, also is there a way to command boinc to give me more work units? And finally, if I set the connection time to once a day, when does it connect? what time?

Okay I went ahead and changed my usage to 20% and to use no more than 10GB and to leave at least 3...

I also changed the connect to internet server or w.e you call it to .01 per day, should I do that?

also, what is "Leave applications in memory while suspended?
(suspended applications will consume swap space if 'yes'"

right now mine is a no.

after I did all this I went ahead and updated my rosetta and I got this message.

7/20/2007 9:55:33 AM|rosetta@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user
7/20/2007 9:55:33 AM|rosetta@home|(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks)

7/20/2007 9:55:38 AM|rosetta@home|Deferring communication for 4 min 2 sec
7/20/2007 9:55:38 AM|rosetta@home|Reason: requested by project

Do I have to just wait for it to connect or is there a way to force work units to me?

this on on this computer

7/18/2007 10:38:23 AM||Processor: 1 GenuineIntel Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 - M CPU 1.70GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7] [fpu tsc sse sse2 mmx]

7/18/2007 10:38:23 AM||Disk: 27.91 GB total, 14.93 GB free

which runs windows XP and I have given it 5GB to use with saving me 3GB and to use at most 1% of my hard drive. Whats wrong? I think (if i did the math right...) that maybe I should be using about .5%...is that right?
