Do the computers have the same name? Sometimes that seems to help BOINC realize they are the same. The computer name is only visible to yourself so I can't tell if they are different.

I was having this problem on a Linux Mepis box. I updated to the latest version of BOINC and the problem seems to be reduced or perhaps even fixed. I haven't caught it sleeping on the job in a while at least. I think I'll check my memory allocation though, I have seen that "Waiting for memory" error even though the machines should have plenty of meemory for the task.

If the time frame is ridiculously long go to the projects tab and highlight the waiting project, then click "Update Now". That should initiate a connection and reset the timer. Sometimes, if the project is down a while, BOINC can up the communication delay to a ridiculous value, like a week or more. It's actually a bug that should be fixed in an upcoming version.

Well, Einstein is back up. This time they changed the RAID controller. Hopefully it will be stable now. Einstein used to be the most stable project.
