Just an update, I tried running the new 3.30 app here on Rosetta and still got client errors on all the WUs.

Which BOINC MGR version are you using?
If it's 7, this has bugs in it. You should revert back to version 6.
If it's 6, then its something else.

I'm using 6.10.58

Yes I believe with this issue there is 100% invalid rate, at least in my case I have not managed to successfully validate a single WU.

My host does have DVD reader/writer (internal to laptop).

Just got a batch of Ralph WUs and I can confirm that my host has been able to successfully complete Ralph while failing here at Rosetta. I set the runtimes to be 1 hr on both projects.

I installed Ralph@Home several days ago, but it won't give me any tasks. I've tried the PROJECT, UPDATE button many times. Any suggestions? ---KMF, Jr.

I also attached about a week ago but only yesterday did I receive any work. Ralph seems to only have work available very sporadically. I did set Ralph to a very high resource share so that BOINC would try to request work more often.

If people are willing, signing up to Ralph@home with computers which are experiencing the problem would probably be worth trying.

Can do.

Actually, going to try a WU from the new Rosetta 3.26 first. Then we'll see about Ralph.

Sigh. Same crap as before. http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/result.php?resultid=497264507

I just got the same: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/result.php?resultid=497320429

A) Anyone using the HP S1931, 2031, 2231, 2331 monitor series?
B) Anyone have their monitor plugged in with a true DVI cable without DVI-to-VGA adapter?

My affected host is a laptop (Dell XPS), every once in awhile I connect a second monitor (actually a Samsung TV) via HDMI but I'm pretty sure I get errors without it connected.

C) Is everyone running with two GPU's installed?
D) Has anyone else discovered that if the second GPU is "uninstalled" via Device Manager, the problem goes away???
E) Anyone using an SLI bridge between multiple GPU's?

Nope, only one discrete GPU inside the laptop, a Geforce 435M.

I was going to try Ralph@Home, but when I went to add it as a BOINC project, it wasn't in the list. Is there is a trick to finding it, or has it been temporarily removed because Rosetta 3.26 just got release and there's nothing to test?

You can attach to it manually by entering the URL in the box after clicking Attach to project: http://ralph.bakerlab.org/

However they do not have very much work right now.

As a follow-up question to this, would there be any benefit for those of us having this problem to head over to RALPH, to serve as testers for any fixes in the works?

Interesting point. The version of the application is currently the same on both Ralph and Rosetta@home, and since we just released 3.26, it'd likely be a while before we'll test a new version.

That said, I just double checked Ralph, and it doesn't look like anyone there is experiencing the same sort of symptoms. I can't say if that's just because there's no one on Ralph that has the type of system that's experiencing problems, or that there's some difference between Ralph and Rosetta@home that causes the problem to disappear - though I doubt it's the latter.

If people are willing, signing up to Ralph@home with computers which are experiencing the problem would probably be worth trying.

Certainly if we ever do figure out what the problem is, we would want to test it on Ralph first, prior to releasing it to Rosetta@home in general.

I've attached my host to ralph, unfortunately I haven't received any ralph tasks yet but still trying. Host page is here.

I do have a host here which does not have discrete GPU, it only uses integrated graphics. It has been running Rosetta without errors.

I am still saving logs for a few more tasks still in progress.

I have been experiencing the same problem with this host. I was able to complete work in the past but now nothing is validating. The BOINC version is 6.10.58.

I will try out the log flags when I clear out work from other projects, maybe I can get to it by this weekend.

I decided to wait for Ivy Bridge for the lower power and so hopefully the IGP will be sufficient for CAD. 8th April is the rumour...

Unfortunately according to this Ivy Bridge has been delayed...

If you are running BOINC 5.x, run the installer and choose the "Service Install" when asked. If you are running BOINC 6.x, run the installer and ensure "Protected application execution" is checked. This causes BOINC to run regardless of who is logged in, and it will also run at the Windows XP Login screen.

17) Message boards : Number crunching : GPU crunchers - boinc 6.4.5 has been released (Message 58083)

I didn't know that GPU stuff was, in my book, "lossy". Math is math to me. A+B should equal C no matter what it is "computed" on. :)

If only it were that simple :P

Even at the same float precision, different CPUs can generate different results for an operation due to differing ways in which the floating point unit is implemented in hardware, despite the existence of standards such as IEEE 754.

And then there's the precision issue itself, since math assumes the existence of an infinite number of digits but it can only be realistically stored with finite memory. So at some point, the number is truncated and the # of bits allocated for the value gives rise to single/double/quad precision numbers.

The traditional use of GPUs (gaming graphics) and the Cell BE has not enforced a need beyond single precision FP math, but as these units are pushed towards more general-purpose number crunching uses, that will eventually change.

That sets the fastest interval that Rosetta is allowed to checkpoint to file. In essence, you'll be preventing Rosetta from saving its state such that tasks will start over from the beginning if Rosetta is restarted. It won't make the tasks take longer to complete or require it to use more RAM but you take a risk of losing crunching time if the application is interrupted.

Personally I leave this setting to something reasonable such as 5-10 minutes because the state saving takes a negligible amount of CPU time and brownouts here are not uncommon.
19) Message boards : Number crunching : Force Multi-core to process 1 WU? (Message 58081)

Post:
Nope, this would require that the Rosetta be designed for multithreading, and BOINC is not designed for scheduling multithreaded apps either. I believe BOINC support is coming in a future release of 6.x but I doubt a version Rosetta will be released to take advantage of it.

In order for multithreading to work, you need to (a) have an algorithm that is easily parallelizable and (b) a reason to do this since multithreading often has an inherent performance impact due to interprocess communication overhead (locking, memory, etc). Perhaps a project that needs results very fast or has very long computation times would see a reason for it.

The case where that might occur would be with a hyperthreaded vs. not hyperthreaded CPU, because both threads must use the same math coprocessor.

It doesn't quite work that way either, hyperthreading is the same as dual-core as far as software is concerned, except that there is not as much performance gain from going non-HT to HT as compared to single-core to dual-core. HT does not let you run a single thread faster. There was an old rumor flying around of a "reverse hyperthreading" in an upcoming AMD CPU which would do something akin to dynamically allocating resources between hardware threads but it hasn't materialized in Intel/AMD's CPU roadmaps. However, there is a feature in Sun's Rock processor called Hardware scout in which the second thread is used to speed up a single application. However, your not likely to see such a CPU designed for backend server applications in a typical desktop ;)

I personally use BoincView for monitoring clients as well as TightVNC for remote control.
