Oh well, at least the rest of the server still works.

Here's hoping the validator gets fully fixed before the weekend.

We're back at over 2m, up from a bit over 1.91M some time yesterday.

Looks like I jinxed it, oops.

Your name is in English and Chinese, do you consider yourself Canadian?

Yes, I do consider myself Canadian.

BTW, looks like the validator is back online. "Workunits waiting for validation" is now down to 1963435 from a bit over 2M.

"Workunits waiting for validation: 1607599"

I guess we'll have to wait after Thanksgiving.
I had to look up what that was. It's in November?

Ah, Thanksgiving day is today where I live. Second Monday of October.
I'm going to assume there is no holiday today where Rosetta is based at.
Odd, from Google it's some kind of thanks for a harvest, I thought it would be fairly fixed (Like Easter, first Sunday in the month or whatever it is).

Here we are, USA/Canada November 24: https://www.calendar-12.com/holidays/thanksgiving/2022

It's celebrated in other countries?

Hang on, aren't you Canadian?

Yes, I'm in Ontario, Canada. Thanksgiving is the second Monday every October here.

[quote]... SSDs suck, I use NVME.

You might benefit from a good google search on NVMe. It's not what you seem to think it is.
I know exactly what they are and have several, they're much faster. An SSD over SATA is far too slow, because of the SATA.

Are you from the Android forum?

Well, clearly you do not know, or you would not be suggesting that NVMe is some kind of storage device. It is not. NVMe is a host controller interface specification, the same as SATA. Thus, one might well imagine that some day, we might also see HDDs with a NVMe interface, just as we now have SSDs with a NVMe interface.
I'm not interested in your OCD. I know perfectly well how all disks work and have been in the business since 1997. Please learn basic English. Here is a helper for you:

Hard disk/rust spinner = mechanical drive connected via SATA, previously IDE. Now gets up to about 170MB/s.

SSD = solid state drive connected via SATA, limited by SATA to about 550MB/s.

NVME = solid state drive connected directly to the motherboard using PCI express, gets up to 7000MB/s.

I prefer 7000 to 550.

SSD just means solid state drive, there is nothing that says SSDs refers only to SSDs connected via a SATA interface. Both SATA SSDs and NVMe SSDs are SSDs.

That being said, Rosetta has not historically required a second computer to validate WUs. The "Server status" page claims the validator to be running. Methinks something is up with the server.

Anyone noticed a high error rate in the recent batch of workunits? They fail within seconds. The stderr outputs are really long.

I haven't seen a working (on Windows) Rosetta 4.20 in ages.

These preetham tasks appear to have problems:

Which leads me to the question I posted.
Whats the difference?

IIRC, Rosetta 4.20 is the regular modern Rosetta that requires a 64bit OS and CPU. 4.21 was released specifically for older systems on 32 bit. I remember there being talk about phasing out 32 bit Rosetta tasks, I think the consensus was that that probably wasn't a good idea so 4.21 was released. I do not know about any other differences.

In other words, 4.20 requires a 64 bit system, 4.21 requires a 32 bit system.

Anyways, "Intel x86 compatible" has nothing to do with Intel vs AMD, the same way "AMD x86_64 compatible" has nothing to do with AMD. They basically mean garden variety X86-32 and X86-64, respectively.

Same issue with all the other borked rb_ tasks. I sure hope they catch this and fix it soon.

Wait, it's the weekend...
This is fine, I'm fine, there's nothing infuriating about this at all... Nothing at all.

SO! MANY! ERRORS!

First off are the known bad movingstub tasks that crash almost instantly.

Then there are the broken rb_ tasks that don't crash as fast.

the problem is that the one`s I abort are the `one minit wunders` that have only a few seconds of CPU time after several hours of elapsed time, and seem to be pointless to continue running them

I've only seen that type of task once, I aborted it after over 20 hours. CPU time was ridiculously low, a few minutes at most, IIRC. Far more times, I see tasks that claim to be running, but with the timer stuck at 0:00 and no results in days. Those tasks get unstuck after relaunching BOINC.

I haven't had any issues in a while, knock on wood.

I've been out of the loop for a little while. Did they recently fix the RAM requirements for the vBox tasks? I'm running 7 Rosetta Python tasks + 1 WCG ARP on 16GBs of RAM.

I'm not having issues, for once.

I've always had this problem, but it's far worse with python tasks.

aaam-NHM_pp-mTIQ_pp-SAR-AMACBEN2_pp_6_2539600_1_0

Instead of running this task, BOINC keeps downloading new Rosetta tasks and running those. Looking at all the tasks on that computer and you'll see this has nothing to do with queue size. It's almost as if BOINC periodically forgets a task exists. It's worse with Python tasks because BOINC will download the same number of tasks as the available threads but will be able to run at most 2 at a time. It's thus far more common to get clogs and "forgotten" tasks.

One more data point:
aagb-SAR-PHE-ACHC13T-mB3PHG_pp_2_2704977_1_1
According to task manager, VirtualBox Global Interface uses 0.5MB, VirtualBox Interface uses 2.3 MB, VirtualBox Headless Frontend uses 28.8, two other instances of VirtualBox Headless Frontend both use less than 1MB.

Still can only get 1 Rosetta Python to run despite me actually have more than 7GB available (my settings mean that less than 6GB is available to BOINC). I guess these tasks really want 6GB of available RAM to run. The most I can do in theory is indeed 2.

Why do these tasks have such absurd RAM requirements? Can anyone point me to a Python task that actually used more than 1GB of ram? I have 4 WCG tasks running, one ARP & three MCM, one Rosetta Python task, one YouTube video running, two chrome tabs open, and a generous smacking of background processes, I still have 7GB of free RAM.
