I have another question about this option: how does this parameter ("use at most X% of memory ...") affect computation performance? If I set this to say 2.5% of my 2gb (which will lead to only 50mb allowed), how will that impact my "credits per day"?

Well, i've just tested that and gess what I got? Two stopped applications and a "waiting for memory" message.

So, if I give up those works and ask for more, the server will send me work that will run in 50mb of ram, or there is a limit, a minimum amount of ram required to run a single app?

Are you sure about that? Can you show me some facts?

Ok, as you say, cache memory should be an indicator of processor performance in rosetta, but what about benchmarks? Do you know about any which could be a good indicator to compare processors performance in rosetta without having to test them directly with rosetta?

I was not referring to the Boinc benchmarks. I was talking about sisoft sandra's benchmarks.

Can I say that the benchmark which best reflects processors performance on rosetta@home is wheatstone (arithmetic floating point operations)?

If not, which one could lead to the best evaluation/guess of processors performance on rosetta@home?

Thanks!

Does anybody have a phenom x3 so i can take a look at how it performs? Running rosetta all the time.

Does rosetta delete its no-longer-needed-files, or this should be a manual operation? I´m asking because i´m fighting a disk spece issue here... How do I know which files are still needed?

I'm having the following problem:

BOINC insists on starting new tasks or applications even thou other ones are not finished! This increases the amout ou memory needed to run BOINC, which I can not afford! I have only 1GB installed memory and a C2D processor, which can take two tasks at a time.

And if I reduce the amount of memory that BOINC is allowed to use, it simply stops one task when it eats all memory and then, like if this was not enough, starts a brand new memory-hungry application!

Is there a way to tame BOINC's urge for memory and run 2 tasks under a 1gb installed memory?

Thanks!

Pedro, I'm guessing you tried to translate the button's text (I appreciate that!). In English I believe you are referring to the "abort" button. If memory is correct, the messages tab will always show a computation error when you manually abort a task that way.

You aren't the only one having odd behavior. The results get sent back to the Project Team and they are working on resolving these issues.

Yes, your right, I'm trying to translate button's text, but I was referring to a windows dialog box and button, not a BOINC button. It is a option shown by windows when a process stops responding. It gives you the option to force finalization.

I was worrying because I just bought an extra stick of memory and it could be damaged or malfunctioning. But since there are other people here reporting the same problem I have some hope.

Looking at the tasks tab in the advanced view, what status is shown? If it shows "running", then zero CPU time in task manager is not normal. Suggest you exit (not just close) BOINC and restart. But if it shows "waiting for memory" or other status, then let us know. It may be normal.

The "Status" field says "running, high priority".

I've just tried to click in the show graphics for one of those tasks and then was prompted with a "not responding" message from windows. After clicking in "finalize task" the status changed to "computation error".

Is there a way to find out the reason for this kind of error?!?!?

dous it indicates an error, in the work or in the message's tab?

No.

Limiting BOINC to less then all of the cores available would use less memory. Otherwise, Rosetta already selects and only sends WUs with low memory requirements to machines with low memory.

If you would post about your machine, and memory and existing preferences it may help to offer more comments.

I have more than one computer running Rosetta. Some have just 512MB of RAM.

To avoid loosing work time in already slow (and with low memory) computers, the "leave apps. in memory" option is enabled.

I was wondering if the "adjustable time factor" could reduce the memory usage.

Another memory issue that confuses me is the fact that while windows task manager indicates aprox. 120mb of RAM per app., page-file usage increases A LOT more when running Rosetta.

Since the project updated my Dell Inspiron laptop ( 2.8 Ghz) wont download work. It has only 512 meg of ram and no fiddling with preferences will let it use virtual memory, that I have found at least. Must I retire the machine pending a memory upgrade?

I have the same problem here... There must be a way to bypass this mem issue

No.

I have probably dozens of machines, including some prestigious low number machines which are exactly the same now as they were then, but merging always favours the later host number, if it works.

But there should be someone whom we could talk to... Someone working in Rosetta that could do this for us. I´m saying this because when i had a similar problem with Seti there was a guy that solved it for me.

Ok, but is there someone who i could ask for a merge of the new host with the old one, terminating the new one? The only problem is that I´ll have a incorrect number of host, witch I don´t want.

I think that maybe i´ve merged them in the worng direction, resulting in the elimination of the old Host. Should I try to re-attach to rosetta with the old host and than merge in the right direction? Or this will result in more mess?

One of my hosts stopped getting credits and when i decided to understand i found out that a new "ghost" host was created in my computer list and was taking all the credit. I tried to merge them but the result was not right. Now i still have 2 hosts where it should be only one and the old one apparently quitted rosetta for some reason i don´t know. I just want it all to go back to the old computer. What do i have to do in order to accomplish my goal?

Thanks!
