But I did have ole Albert as a backup. Those jobs have really gotter large. Personally I think there could have been more updates, but if there was nothing new to report, there was nothing new to report. If anyone is curious, I have be able to communicate with Rosetta, but so far I have not be able to get any movement of data in either direction. F. Prefect |

(Message 40541)
Posted 8 May 2007 by F. Prefect Post: After installing version 5.8.16 on my machines yesterday, I have uploaded 3 or 4 jobs from 2 machines. However when I attempted to connect and upload jobs from 2 Athlon 1.2 (T-bird cores) everything locked on both machines and the BOINC icon in the lower right tray had a white circle with a red X on it. I cannot even get into contol panel to see if I can do an unistall and reinstall to get the machines back up. The two machines are not networked but are connected to the same phone line. Posted 2 May 2007 by F. Prefect Post: I happened to notice this post first. Then worked my way through the Q&A boards and saw the same issue raised about three more times. No point in trying to respond to you on all of the boards. When in doubt, post to Number Crunching. I thought for sure that changing the resources from 100/100 to 200/100 with the 200 going to Rosetta would give me additional work, but I now have it set at 500/100 and my last job is 70% completed with no more in cache. What am I doing wrong on this one machine? |

Thank you, and I apoligize for any additional posts regarding this subject that was driving me crazy. I had forgotten which forum I had posted the question in and just now found your response. Don't know if it will work yet, but it does indeed make a good deal of sense. I shall give it a try. thanks, Gary |

Problem D/L'ing Rosetta WU

Read FAQ, Problem Still Exists
(Message 40142)
Posted 1 May 2007 by F. Prefect Post: I have been running Einstien@Home for over 2 years and have also done some work on Rosetta. Due to a problem E@H is having with their new R2 work units with specific AMD processors (of which I have 5) I have decided to just switch to Rosetta on those machines. After attaching to Rosetta and downloading the necessary data and jobs I began to complete Rosetta jobs until they were finished. With E@H I would automatically recieve new work when I was getting "low" but on 2 of my machines I am out of Rosetta work. Resetting the program did not even produce any new work. I have tried general pref. settings for the number of days between connections (default as well as home, work, and school)from 10 days all the way down to .5 day. I have the "target" currently set at 10 hours, but have tried other settings with no success. Does anyone have any ideas how I can get additional work. I still have E@H intalled on these machines and I read in the FAQ that a large inventory in that program could be the cause, but I am doing the last one one machine and only have 3 or 4 on the rest. I have also tried suspending E@H in a effort to "trick" Rosetta into seeing no jobs of any kind available. Unfortunately, it wasn't about to be trick. I have 5 or 6 machines I could be running Rosetta on if only I can find the probably obvious error I have made when setting up Rosetta. All of the machines are at one location and not networked. Help. Gary F. Prefect |

Posted 1 May 2007 by F. Prefect Post: I believe Tom's right - there's currently no SSE optimisations. Your Thunderbirds will be welcome here ;) Thanks, that's a relief. Now I have gotten into another mess. I ran out of work for Rosetta and can't get any more. I've tried setting the "connect to" from everything from 10 days to .5 days in the general pref. and can't get a thing. Currently I have all machines set to 5 days. I have 6 machines and all at home and not networked. I'm able to get work on the slower machines, it's the Athlon 64 that's causing me problems. I have the target run time set to 10 hours on all machines. I've even tried resetting Rosetta on the 64 machine with no success. I know I'm overlooking something simple as I have run 2 projects at the same time before and am doing so now with the slower machines. Any ideas on what might be going on? Gary F. Prefect |

Posted 30 Apr 2007 by F. Prefect Post: I have been running both Einstein@home as well as Rosetta@home for a couple of years but my main emphasis was on E@H. They have began releasing their new R2 work units that run considerably faster on machines than can run something called SSE instruction on the chip. I just discovered other than my 2 Athlon 64 XP chips, I am setting on 5 machines than have the Thunderbird core that cannot ues the SSE instructions and I will take a performance hit of as much as 40% over the old R1 jobs. Does the current Rosetta work run faster on the newer AMD chips that have the Thoroughbred or Barton chip? I realize the newer clips will be faster due to higher clock and FSB speeds, but I'm primarily concerned about this SSE instruction set that I was completely unaware of. If the SSE is not an issue with Rosetta work, I will be moving all machines to Rosetta. Thanks, Gary F. Pefect |

Problem with one machine
(Message 39999)
Posted 28 Apr 2007 by F. However on my Athlon 64 XP 3400 I only recieved 2 jobs and am currently out of work and cannot seem to find a way to download more. Under general default settings I have it set to connect every 10 days (and have tried other numbers) with the "turnaround" set at 10 hours in the Rosetta preferences. Any ideas? |

Could Einstein@home effect Rosetta
(Message 34988)
Posted 18 Jan 2007 by F. Prefect Post: Firstly, I have checked the FAQs with no results. I recently set up Rosetta on a machine that also has Einstein@home installed although I have no E@H work left as their project is down. Could my settings in E@H be effecting my Rosetta ability to supply the correct number of WUs for the machine? I made no adjustments to the preferences and my initial settings and began with 3 WU for a 2.2 64bit Athlon. The final job is 80% completed and I can't get additional work. I am on dialup and none of my machines are networkded. I have suspended E@H so Rosetta should be the only program active. I would like to run Rosetta if I could get it to work. Work Allocations
(Message 34986)
Posted 17 Jan 2007 by F. Prefect Post: With Einstein@home having what appears to be some extended downtime, I just installed Rosetta on a couple of my machines and will more than likely continue to run Rosetta even after Einstein@home is back up. But I'm having a problem getting enough work to last for more than a few hours. It doesn't seem to matter whether I set the connect to network every 1 day or 10 days, I recieve the same 3 work units. I was also told by a friend that the "target run time" will produce about the same number of credits if 4 units are run at 6 hrs each or 1 run with a target of 24 hrs. All I'm trying to do is set up the program that will allow me to download enough work for several days. What settings would produce something along those lines? I have 5 machines with Rosetta running on 2 (so far) and none are connected. 1 is a 1.4 Athlon, the other is a 64bit Athlon running at approx. 2.2. Thanks, F. Prefect |

Posted 6 Jan 2007 by F. Prefect Post: Surely it has nothing to do with Rosetta@home science either ;) Einstien went down again about 8 hours ago and I'm considering moving all my machines to Rosetta if I could figure out how to do it. When BOINC came into existance, I began by running 2 projects, Rosetta and Einstein. About a years ago I decided just to run Einstein@home and detached Rosetta. When Einstein began having rather lengthy downtimes recently, I decided to put Rosetta back on 3 or 4 machines in case I ran out of work from Einstein. I was able to re-attach to Rosetta on 2 machines running XP with no problem and D/L the necessary files, but on win98 machines I received the message that I had attached to Rosetta and showed 1 file as being downloaded although no data was moving. I seem to recall that there were a couple of files that needed to be removed before Rosetta would actually begin to install. I did a search for the word rosetta on drive C and discovered there were 25-30 files in other than the BOINC folder that contain "rosetta". I started just to delete all of them but thought there might be some file sharing and thought better of it. Does anyone have any idea how I can get the files needed to run rosetta downloaded without having to delete everthing and completely start from scratch? It says I'm attached and even shows 1 file being downloaded, but as a said above, no data is moving. Thanks in advance. F. Prefect ford42@inter-linc.net |
