I've been running BOINC on my Mac and a Windows PC on my LAN and have just finished expunging Windows completely.

I'd like to get the PC busy again with BOINC and have a preliminary question. I put up Debian GNU/Linux (3.1 r1) on the PC and wondered if anyone is having any issues with BOINC on the platform?

I've got several Linux boxes, one CentOs, rest all Debian. Look at my list of computers if you're curious (click on my name on the left, then there is a link saying view computers or suchlike. The Linux box with the EL in the version is the CentOs box, the other Linices (?) are all Debian (Sarge stable release). No linux specific problems.

Do make sure your firewall allows the box to communicate with itself (localhost-localhost) on ports 1043 & 31416. Boinc uses TCP/IP to pass messages from the control porgram to the client as if the programs were on separate boxes. I had to open those ports to get it to work because I'd previously locked everything down dead tight.

Once you get it working with the official BOINC client, you may notice you get less credit than you used to get under windows. If this matters to you, look into getting a Linux optimsed client instead. You can drop it in while BOINC is not running, and it will pick up where the official client left off.

Personally I haven't bothered doing that yet, I am still on the official client
