Message 112380 - Posted: 31 Mar 2025, 7:20:06 UTC - in response to Message 112379.

Ok...so I add what to the host file content? just the numbers of the ip or is there specific server names or what?
ive seen just BOINC bakerlab with ip #'s and I have seen someone with some more speficfic names and different ip's. So what do I use?
You already quoted the fix in a previous post.

128.95.160.156 boinc-files.bakerlab.org
128.95.160.156 bwsrv1.bakerlab.org

Open Hosts, copy those entries in there, save it. Done.
(If Win10 doesn't let you do that, open a new text file with Notepad (Not Wordpad or Word), copy those entries into it, save it as Hosts (not Hosts.txt just Hosts). Rename the existing Hosts file Hosts.old.
Copy the just created Hosts file to
C: Windows System32 drivers etc
Done).

I'm not going to be so naive as to say anything's fixed, but in the last hour or two the small assimilator backlog has dropped to zero, tasks have become available, in progress tasks have risen from 66k to 99k and I've filled my caches on PC and laptop.
Something's gone right for a short time at least

Did someone say the IPv6 setting sometimes gets reset back on after a reboot?
Otherwise I don't know.

Sid..in the last 24-48 hours that has been the hot topic here.
It seems if you add the IP addresses for Rosetta in the hosts file (if it is blank) this whole mess goes away.
I did the disable IPV6 thing and had no issue on 4 and then thought why possibly screw up something else, so I added the IP addresses to the host file in windows and enabled IPV6 again and had no issues since.

Hey Tom, I've been fighting with the IPV6 thing as well, but with the help of Grant and the others I resolved it.
Have a look at your hosts file. If it is blank like mine was, just add theses ip address to your host file.
128.95.160.156 boinc-files.bakerlab.org
128.95.160.156 bwsrv1.bakerlab.org

Make sure you have administrator privileges otherwise you can not save the changes.

This is everything I have found with the help of others here and it works on my system.

Feeder still not running

Right then, for a wee while now, I've been takin' the foot off the gas with the maths projects, see? Figured it was high time to chuck a bit more support at the humanitarian efforts. Rosetta's one of those good eggs, so I've been givin' it the beans on most of my computers.

Now, the cheeky wee problem is, for days on end I've been gettin' this message: 'feeder not running' when it's time for an update. And wouldn't you know it, I'm in the middle of wrangling all my machines over from Windows to Linux. So, naturally, I'm gettin' a bit peely-wally about havin' a fair whack of work units stuck on these Windows boxes. It's pushin' back the day I can finally make the switch without losing all that graft, and then there's the wee issue of not being able to fire up the project once a machine's gone all Linuxy.

Look, I've got a proper soft spot for Rosetta, a truly worthwhile endeavour it is. But even a saint has their limits, eh? Running a fair few computers to help out the boffins is costin' me more than half my leccy bill, which I'm happy enough to cough up. But on the flip side, I'd expect the clever clogs who need our CPU grunt to make sure the information's flowin' smoothly and all shipshape.

Hopin' a fix for this wee fiddle comes along sharpish. Cheers!

It looks like Linux is about the same as windows when it comes to a file called Host in the etc folder.
take a look here: https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/edit-hosts-file/ scroll down towards the bottom and right after windows and mac is a section on linux.

Then you just add these two IP addresses and save everything and in theory you should be up and running again.
128.95.160.156 boinc-files.bakerlab.org
128.95.160.156 bwsrv1.bakerlab.org

Us Windows guys have been going crazy trying to find the problem and some others guys did and it has solved our problems.

My host file was empty and when I added these two lines to it the server error went away.
Maybe that is the case there.

We are out of work..again....sigh
Tasks ready to send 0
Tasks in progress 76669
And there are 27497 computers online with credit, so you can see how fast the work goes.
Need about a million tasks to keep us busy for any length of time.

I have 2 fresh tasks in queue and 6 in process then I am done.

I had added one of the lines (I did not see two lines at the time) to Windows 10 hosts file and it had solved a problem.
However, I was getting the 'feeder not running' error and noticed My host file was empty again. Added both line this time.

Not sure if it is some security software that I need to let it know about the entries or a Windows update that reset the hosts file.

Also, this is not an issue with my other computers. no hosts update needed on 2 with Windows 10 and an old Win 7 that is still running.
(Finally stopped using Win95 several years ago but still sort of miss XP.)

I don't quite know how I'm managing it, but my PC with 16 threads always seems to have 10-15 tasks waiting to start and my laptop using 8 cores always manages to have 2-5 tasks waiting to start.
That's whether I manually intervene or not.
With so little work about I'm amazed how I'm keeping going throughout.

Saying this out loud will now be the kiss of death - I just know it

It looks like everything of yours has uploaded now.
You're not the first to report your hosts file going blank. It's the first place to check if you're getting that feeder error again.
And like you, 3 of my devices have never had a problem, but one won't behave itself without these edits.
I don't think anyone knows why some are susceptible and some aren't tbh.

I checked again and while at least 1 Win 10 is still happy my Win 7 does have the error:
3/31/2025 9:44:51 PM | Rosetta@home | Server error: feeder not running
3/31/2025 9:44:51 PM | Rosetta@home | Project requested delay of 3600 seconds
3/31/2025 9:46:09 PM | | Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
...

Will have to add the 2 lines to hosts file there too if I want more Rosetta work.

Having Tasks lay around in "Ready to Report" status is no fun to look at .... But I notice that the Science appears to be completed and I appear to be getting credit .... So ugly to look at.... but the Task data appears to be getting through.

But how do you disable for baker lab and leave it on for everything else? That's where I am stuck at.

idk, on Linux you can run BOINC in a container (like LXC) and disable IPv6 in there (or just a network namespace if you're skillful). On Windows, nothing came to my mind except a virtual machine (which will is heavier and have performance overhead, so I can't recommended that) with IPv6 disabled in guest OS.
