Run “bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off” to disable hyper-v
You can use https://leomoon.com/downloads/desktop-apps/leomoon-cpu-v/ to check whether Harware Virtualization is Enabled in BIOS
I know how to turn it off, I was just wondering why it would be on, as I've never seen it enabled.

The Rosetta 4.20 Tasks are pretty much non-existent, with only the very occasional small batch being released

On the face of it, I'd agree, except for the fact I see a few android 4.20 tasks every few days.
Nowhere else. No idea why.

I have 3 Androids and 7 Windows PCs. They all get 4.2 occasionally.

Is that right?
Very occasionally I get tasks on my laptop, but not for several weeks on my three desktops (one of which has just had its CPU cooler conk out, so is out of commission since Friday)
All a bit strange anyway

Message 106639 - Posted: 24 Jul 2022, 17:46:00 UTC

I'm updating my general software due to some technical hitch and among the suggestions to upgrade (via Norton) is Virtual Box from 6.0.14 to 6.1.30
Rather than let Norton do the upgrade itself, I visited the Install Boinc page to see it offers v6.1.12 which is near enough and sounds like it's been checked out, so I did a download.
But at the point of installation, it says it's only offering v6.0.14 not 6.1.12, so I cancelled everything as I'm running both it and the latest Boinc

Is there someone who should be nudged to get them to correct this, whether the web page or the version offered (ideally the latter)?

Oh, only 1 in the last week, and loads 11 days ago. I forgot I've turned Rosetta and other things off while I'm concentrating on WCG work. I'll stick them all back on and see what happens, but they're 0 priority as I want to get the WCG stuff when it's there.

If I type "download virtualbox" into google, I get Oracle's page offering 6.1.36. Why are you only seeing 6.0.14?

And why are you listening to Norton?

Anyway, I use VB 5 since it works on all the projects, 6 doesn't.

I'm making the (reasonable imo) assumption that the VB version that's been tested compatible with Boinc is the one offered on Berkley's download page here which offers 6.1.12 on the webpage, but on installation isn't announced as that version but 6.0.14, which is what I'm already running

And why are you listening to Norton?

Because my email provider locked my account the other day (and is threatening to do it again) due to something about my system being compromised, so I've changed a few account passwords and I'm looking for the latest software updates of everything I run and Norton Utilities has been able to find updates to some Windows system files that I haven't been able to discover by going direct to the provider's website or by using Windows Update. Driver update utilities are flooded with compromised software so I never use them. Norton was the best I've found in the last dozen years tbf

Edit: The updates were for the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable for x86 & x64 fwiw

It took me a few looks, but now I activated SVM in my MSI BIOS.

But it still fails: Some other process apparently already uses Hyper-V, blocking BOINC and VirtualBox from using it.

Hyper-V is, of course, disabled in the Windows 10 components. So I wonder what else might be able to do so. And possible answers start to scare me...
Fun and success!

ROTFPMSL! You trust Boinc developers. It doesn't have to be compatible with Boinc, all that does is hand it the tasks, it has to be compatible with the project you're running. The major version number (5 or 6) is what's important. I've seen no differences in the numbers after the decimal point. Version 6 makes older programs break, as in a third of the projects, so I use version 5.

And why are you listening to Norton?

Yeah, you have a problem on your system because you're using Norton, it misses stuff. It's job is to stop your system getting infected in the first place. I fix people's computers as a hobby/part time job and every single time there's a virus infection, it's Norton on there. My Aunt used to use Norton backup, until I discovered it wasn't actually backing much up! I use AVG free, and run Malwarebytes every few months (so it's free, you pay for realtime protection), and I download all sorts of illegal programs and films from dodgy pirate sites, and yet I've never had any problems at all.

You don't need program updates, you need to run a virus scan. Get Norton to do a deep/full scan of your whole computer for viruses, then disable it (there should be a way to turn it off temporarily) and install AVG and get that to scan through aswell. Then again with Malwarebytes.

Have you checked through this? https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/application-management/virtualization-apps-not-work-with-hyper-v

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

Running this in an Admin console may have solved the issue. HWiNFO reports AMD-V available now, and BOINC doesn't complain anymore.
Fun and success!

Those are virtualbox only. You need that installed, VT-X or AMD's equivalent enabled in the BIOS, and make sure you have them allowed on your computer's settings pages on here, I can see your computers but I can't see the extra bits at the bottom which are private to you, against virtualbox jobs, there is a button saying allow or skip. If allow is showing, click it to turn them on.:

Err... no. It's because I only trust them as far as they've nominally tested something and no further.
But I take your point and, using the link kotenok2000 provided (thanks), I've found 6.1.36 and fully upgraded VirtualBox now

Lots of assumptions and fallacies there. The issue (allegedly anyway) relates to info on a Darkweb site with datalists going back to 2016 that's supposed to have my data on. My system hasn't been compromised - some unknown commercial system from years ago was compromised by having its data (containing my passwords and other identifiable data) exposed. I'd already fully updated and done full scans with Power Eraser, finding nothing wrong with my system at all.
As far as relying on using a version of AVG free that makes no pretence of having real-time protection goes, then claiming it's fine because it can't find what it doesn't attempt to prevent, is as comical as it sounds. It's consistently at the bottom of thorough evaluations. I think better of Malwarebytes, but it's certainly no better than the more comprehensive package I have. I'm afraid you're relying on a reputation that disappeared in the early 2000s and are hanging onto it like grim death.
Combined with the fact that Norton is the only software able to find and internally update elements of Windows that Windows itself can't find and update, I'm more than happy with it.

The latest version is not always the best, I'm on the latest 5 before they messed things up for half the projects.

Why would a commercial system have more than one of your passwords?

I'd already fully updated and done full scans with Power Eraser, finding nothing wrong with my system at all.
Updating your system isn't going to fix anything, I've no idea why you're concentrating on that. If a commercial company has been hacked, there's nothing you can do with your computer to sort that.

As far as relying on using a version of AVG free that makes no pretence of having real-time protection goes,
Of course it has real time protection, why would you think it doesn't? It for example spotted me using KMSAuto to pirate windows and confiscated the executable immediately. Of course I told it that was safe :-)

I think better of Malwarebytes, but it's certainly no better than the more comprehensive package I have.
Malwarebytes is for malware, not viruses.

I'm afraid you're relying on a reputation that disappeared in the early 2000s and are hanging onto it like grim death.

Norton always has been and always will be a rip off. Like I said, I've removed viruses (using AVG!) that got past someone's Norton. Norton is absolutely rubbish, half the time it fails to update itself properly, and you trust it with the rest of your computer? I assume you're paying hard earned cash for what most people get for free. In fact at my last two places of work I put AVG on everything instead of the Norton they had previously, and nobody ever had a problem after that. I guess I was supposed to pay for the commercial license but it let me install 1000 home versions :-)
