Task exited with zero status but no finished file...if this happens repeatedly you may have to reset the project.
When I started getting this bogus message last year everyday of the week I solved the "problem" by removing Rosetta from my list of active projects, since neither re-setting the project nor re-installing BOINC stopped them.
This year when the same bogus messages started up again I finally noticed that many of them were about the same tasks over and over and over again...see my edited message list below in which I re-arranged some entries to make this obvious
I also had another amazing epiphany (at least by my admittedly low standards) and actually looked up the status of all these "zero status...no finished file" tasks and lo and behold...I've been getting credit for all of them.
BTW I don't run BOINC as a service in case that has any relevancy here.
Just in case I haven't been the only clueless cruncher here maybe this info will help someone else...

This is apparently a BOINC issue that affects all projects at random, not just Rosetta. The last post I saw on this subject mentioned the developers were still trying to identify the source, but a common theme seems to be anti-virus/anti spyware software.

If you have security software installed with "on-access" scanning it will sometimes prevent or delay BOINC from creating files. When this occurs the system can't find the file it created and registers an error.

To get around this you can exclude the BOINC data directory from your security software's scan. Please note though that the BOINC data directory is probably different to your BOINC installation directory. Search online for "BOINC data directory" for help tracking it down (its location varies between OSs).

Thanks Murasaki for the reply!

I've already excluded BOINC Projects and part of the BOINC Data directories (the parts relating to Rosetta) from my Private Firewall 7 & Avast 2014 AV real-time scanning (which helped to some extent I think) but I'll try excluding the entire BOINC & BOINC Data directories for awhile - or until the same error pops up again.

BTW I've run MilkyWay@Hm, QMC@Hm & LHC@Hm in the past and I've been running Einstein@Hm for several yrs now and I don't recall any of them being as error prone as Rosetta. On the other hand I've done some rough calculations and apparently about 10% of my CPU time spent on Rosetta tasks ends up with errors ie time wasted on tasks with no valid result; so maybe I'm being too anal-retentive here...

I don't seem to have GZIP.exe in the BOINC Directory & I wonder if that's the root of this problem. Despite all the gobbledeegook data/info listed for each task there's nothing listed about what causes the gzip.exe errors.

See my reply on your other thread about the GZIP issue. It appears to be a problem affecting several users and is not caused by your machine. One of the scientists has speculated that the length of the task name could be exceeding the character limit of some processes in some versions of Windows - that is why tasks with shorter names are still working. They are going to try reducing the names of tasks to see if that resolves the problem.

I am not familiar with all of the projects you mentioned there, but in general most BOINC projects I have encountered run several experiments a year with large batch runs. Rosetta on the other hand can run several experiments a day with much smaller batch runs. Every time you start a new experiment you are more likely to encounter an error in the task design, so Rosetta probably has a higher risk of new errors occuring frequently but the other projects have a higher risk of their infrequent errors affecting a larger number of their user base.

In terms of the amount of CPU time that you are wasting, you are probably overestimating it at 10%. Rosetta scientists have confirmed previously that they can often retrieve useful data from a task that registers as "compute error" or "validate error" - it is often the final decoy that has a fault and the other decoys produced by the task are perfectly fine. Also, even failed tasks are useful to the scientists as it helps them improve the next generation of the Rosetta software (several versions released each year) or correct faults in future task runs before they are issued.

See also the comment in my previous reply (linked above) about earning credit for "failed" tasks.

I very recently noticed that Rosetta does use 7ZIP to decompress downloaded files and presumably to compress files for uploading - (since 7ZIP is the only compression/decompression program I have) although maybe 7ZIP balks at filenames less than the Windows limitation of 260 characters* Although I couldn't find a file name with this many characters in my "client/computer error" results check this out it's about 245 characters long (on my last count that is):
WARNING! attempt to create gzipped file ../../* projects/boinc.bakerlab.org_rosetta/benchmark_0014_alex_metric_58c8eb0a169e5c49e1cef5331416f2432f6d8260_ploops_32_input_0002_no_lig_fragments_contact_opt_iteration_1_dbe4269ef4fb4de99e2f824cdcbaf1c6_fold_SAVE_ALL_OUT_170252_2287_1_0 failed.
*(Apparently C:/Program Data/BOINC is left out here)

I was even willing to put up with a 10% error rate - a figure I arrived at by simply counting all completed tasks as using 10,000 cpu seconds regardless of the result, and then dividing the total # of completed tasks by the # of tasks ending with errors and/or invalid results. Thanks to your feedback I now understand that even failed tasks are useful and not the complete waste of time I thought they were. Well if nothing else at least I did try to think things out for a change (and ask for help) instead of employing my usual solution to puzzling BOINC problems (real or imagined) which has been to ditch the "problem" project like a hot potato and switching over to another one.
Thanks again for your feedback, which will hopefully inspire me to have an attitude adjustment - and learn a wee bit more about the projects my PC is working on.

I've been a BOINC member for 15 yrs now, mostly running SETI but I used to run Rosetta years back and, since SETI has been having WU issues, decided to start Rosetta up again. Anyway, I've been getting the exact same msg (see below). I noticed it when, after running Rosetta for a week or so, I had accumulated no points at all. I read some of the answers to the other posts concerning this issue, something about anti-virus software possibly conflicting with reporting. If it matters, I use ZoneAlarm Firewall & AVG anti-virus. Just to make it easier for anyone who may reply, I've had some severe health problems the last 4 yrs (Leukemia, sepsis resulting in my being in a coma for 11 days & having 5 strokes while in the coma), right when I turned 40. Not to brag, but, before all this happened, I scored 149 on my college IQ test in my early 30s, but it's quite difficult for me to comprehend a lot now. I got a bit confused at the answers that were given. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
I am.....
Sincerely,
JC

Message 77723 - Posted: 9 Dec 2014, 15:15:11 UTC - in response to Message 77722.

I am.....
Sincerely,
JC

I've just had a look at your tasks and nothing much seems to be wrong. It does look like you were unlucky to run into a couple of bad tasks, one with a similar error to what I've come on here to report, so I'll mention yours at the same time. Nothing you can correct at your end. Your firewall and AV ought to be fine.

You ought to have had some credits by now. You should be showing around 738.

Sid, Many thanks to your response to my post. I just noticed today that I do actually have about 689 credits now. It's just weird, because, when I saw the msgs sasying that there were no "finished files", it was showing that I had no credits. But, they are there now so I'm not going to worry about it. Thank you very nuch for the help!

One of the reasons your points are lagging is you don't initially get any points for those faulty tasks - because they're faulty. But a follow-up job runs on the website that finds these problems and credits you for all the work you did - just that it runs a day or so later. You are getting credited for everything you've done. Eventually.

Also, you seem to have set yourself up to run each task for 10 hours, so it's a long time before your Boinc visits again to collect the points for the tasks you uploaded the previous time.

If you look under your name here in the message area, after you posted you're now showing 1127 points when you say your own Boinc only shows you having 689. If you force an update at your end 5 minutes after you send tasks, those points should show with you too.

Also, from the log you posted earlier, you're running Boinc 7.4.8 while the latest version is now 7.4.27. That'll give you the latest stable version of Boinc and get rid of another line in your log.
