What happens to all work units in which are not classified as lowest energy structure?
Are they discarded or is there some useful information?

They are useful. Partly because they were necessary to locate the minimum. But also because they can be graphed and help quantify how well a given technique is working to locate the minimum energy structure. On a graph you should see some disparate avenues pursued, if everything is clumped together, then it shows room to improve the methods used to better attack specific difficult areas or to eliminate the overlap across the other models processed.
