Running both at 'full throttle' 24/7/365; except for a few times a year when I shut 'em down to blow all the dust out :)

Im only using für rosetta 1 or 2 Cores of my working PC with Celeron E3200 oc @ 2,8Ghz. I hope there is some work soon again, im on backup Projects since some days ;)

Right now I'm only running one machine, with an Intel Core i7-940 OC'd to 3.6 GHz, with HyperThreading active. 6 of the 8 virtual cores are dedicated nearly 24/7 to running Rosetta@home and Seti@home, split about evenly. The Seti@home probably has a bit of an advantage, since it can use my nVidia GTX480 chip to do work and Rosetta can't, but Rosetta winds up using about 4 or 5 of the 6 virtual cores on the CPU pretty much all the time.

I'm wanting to upgrade to a Core i7-980X CPU so I can have 12 virtual cores (OC'd to somewhere north of 4 GHz), and an nVidia GTX590 vid-card to give me the equivalent of two GTX580 chips on one PCI-e slot... But those are extremely expensive right now, so I'm still saving up. :-)

Fwiw my FX8120 is overclocked, running at 4.454GHz - 18.5 multiplier, 240.8 MHz FSB. Keep pushing it

i7-4790k @ 4400MHz on all cores. HT enabled. Just came back to Rosetta after a long time away. I'd like to be crunching more, but it's summer here and heat is an issue. It usually runs between 25C and 32C ambient in the room where my PC is kept so I am using TThrottle to limit my crunching with a set CPU temp.

I have 8 of my old PowerEdge 2850 servers running Rosetta as a backup when SETI@home doesn't have Astropulse works to do.
6 - Dual 1c/2t CPU 3.0GHz
2 - Dual 1c/2t CPU 2.8GHz
So burning 32 at a time right now for me.

a 1st generation haswell 4771@3.5Ghz (without K) cpu, somewhat 'old' compared to the recent chips but has been doing pretty ok

as it is the tropics here, similarly i throttled the speeds at 3.5ghz running 8 r@h threads concurrently, cpu temps normally level around 60-65C which i'd think is 'not too hot' considering the workload.

i'd guess the soon to be released skylake cpus would outperform this that it'd look like the old haswell is collecting dust but i'd just make do :)

That's a sweet chip indeed!

My two dedicated crunching boxes are i7-4765T / i7-4785T respectively. Emphasis on the T flavor as they are specifically binned for high efficiency (the wife only lets me do this if these things make zero noise and little to no heat, and if they don't take up any space/"get in the way" :P, hence I've gone to super tiny form factor boxes **picture here**)

I'm interested in the power efficiency of your i7-5960X though, 1.037V makes it sound like it sips power lightly :D

Hi,
my PC uses around 187W running 16 R@H tasks simultaneously.

i7 5960X
GTX 970 (not in use for this test)
4x4GB DDR4 2133
Samsung 850 Pro SSD
ASRock X99M-Killer
Super Flower 650W Leadex Platinum
USB mouse + keyboard connected

The CPU stays below 70°C under load with a Noctua NH-D15S and one fan running at 750 rpm. Very quiet.
When I have the GTX 970 reference card running as well (GPUGrid) the PC takes around 310W or power and gets a bit louder since the GPU is the loudest part in my PC. But still very tolerable.
But the heat output is quite substantial when running GPU+CPU tasks together, although it could be worse (GTX Titan Z, i7 980...).

Ah, I'm pretty sure my future wife (assuming all goes well) will also have the same rules as to how much can go into "the computer". Little does she know how much magic goes on inside the "the computer" box lol

The 5960X is 140W. But... it is a monster. So watt-per-watt, I'd assume it's very efficient.

Those two mini boxes I posted pics of max out at 35watts at the wall, each. Extremely efficient, very quiet (basically no noise at all actually, I have them tucked under a desk in the back room 'out of the way' as per wife).
Together their combined Recent Average Credit is at 6717.81, which is admittedly lower than Dave's 5960X which has a RAC of 7,039.64.. But considering my two boxes take max 70W-75W at the wall and his is at 180W+ for just ~320 more RAC, I'd say the power efficiency on my two little boxes is heads and shoulders better.

Same number of jobs - 16 - as the 5960X, between those two boxes, mind you the clock rate is at 2GHz each instead of 3-4GHz, but still, considering the amount of crunching done (if we can assume the points are a good indicator of this) vs. the wattage is definitely in favor of these T variants.

Looking forward to getting some 14nm chips in a similar form factor to see if I can't get to an even more efficient farm XD

Let's see how much RAC that monster can do! A few weeks should be enough to have a stable RAC.
