Greetings:

I just now aborted the Rosetta work unit that was running, because there were no graphics on the screensaver, and the Rosetta graphics window would freeze and not respond.

Prior to this, the Rosetta screensaver was operating perfectly, so I suspect the problem is isolated to only this one Rosetta work unit.

There is one other possibility.

I'm using my computer to listen to the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, so maybe there is a temporary software conflict.

However, that has not occurred previously, nor is there currently any problem with the screensaver graphics on my other BOINC projects, each of which is appearing normally.

Without screensaver graphics, I will not run the Rosetta project on my computer.

Whatever the problem was, it's now resolved, for the Rosetta screensaver graphics are operating normally.

Maybe there was just something wrong with that one work unit, which I aborted.

Once again, I had to abort a Rosetta work unit, because the screensaver graphic would not appear properly, or else it froze on a blank screen.

At the time, no other program was running on my computer, which precludes any software conflicts, so obviously, it must have been a defective work unit.

When the Rosetta project works, it works beautifully.

But, this is the second time I've had to abort a Rosetta work unit because it froze up and failed to display screensaver graphics.

I reckon I'll have to monitor this project more closely.

In your preferences, configured via the website, there is a setting for the percentage of CPU time you will allow to be used by the graphics. For the venue the host you mention is using, what is this set to?

The graphic adds no value to the science work being done and so by default BOINC limits that amount of CPU used by that process. This retains more CPU for the science work. Often this means the graphic doesn't refresh very frequently. The task also has a number of initialization steps to perform to begin displaying the graphic, so sometimes it takes about 2 minutes for it to really gear up. Have you given it two minutes? Also, some phases of the calculations take considerable time (up to 5 minutes) to consider the next conformation of the structure, and so until more calculations are done there is no change to display.

I had forgotten that you were talking about the screen saver, not the graphic. I believe the % of CPU for graphics still pertains to the screen saver. Some types of tasks don't present the screensaver. Watching it more closely and aborting things will not help the working being done at R@h. The graphics is a secondary function and whether it is moving or not has no reflection on the progress of the science task being performed. So "froze up" as in "the Windows application became unresponsive" is not what is occurring.
