Hello,

I've recently reinstalled my operating system and I'm trying to setup BOINC again.

However, I keep getting "Failed to attach to project", followed by an empty error message: "An error has occurred; check messages for details"

On the messages tab, there are no errors, simply a "Fetching configuration file" message.

Network access is enabled and working fine, no proxies or firewalls in the middle.

I've had this problem several times before, but unfortunately I can't remember what I did to solve it.

Can anybody help?

Thanks :)

Rosetta can sometimes take a while for all the files to come thru and for the crunching to start, give it a day and then see if it is working or not. You can crunch for an alternate project in the short term and then when Rosetta comes thru you can stop crunching for the others. In the mean time make sure you have plenty of free hard drive space and it is available to Boinc by checking your settings on the web site under Your Account or by right clicking the Boinc icon and then opening the Boinc Manager and then clicking on the Disks tab. It should tell you how much space is available to Boinc for its use. As long as you have at least a few gigabytes available you should be fine. The next thing to check is the version of Boinc, make sure it is not really old, the newest is version 6.10.58, if yours is older than 6.10.18, you might want to upgrade. Also in the newer versions click on Advanced, Preferences and then processor usage in the Boinc Manager, you will see a line that says: 'While processor usage is less than percent", make sure this is zero and not the default 25. This line is there so people with programs that must run in the background will still have adequate cpu time available for them, but for most of us it just stops Boinc from crunching. Boinc already runs at the lowest priority of anything on your pc, so even checking the mail will slow or stop Boinc, then when there are enough free cpu cycles Boinc picks back up again. Setting that to zero means Boinc will run like you think it should.

Thanks for your reply :)

I downloaded BOINC's latest version, the problem is I can't attach to any project and it's been like this for a few days. I've set it to run always (CPU, GPU and network) and still it just sits there...

I've had this problem before, almost a year ago, and I really expected it to be solved by now :|

Certainly a very rare problem. Implying that there is something in your environment blocking the communications to the projects. It is easy to miss things, or be unaware of how a network is configured. I'd suggest you reverify your statement "Network access is enabled and working fine, no proxies or firewalls in the middle." because if that were true, I really don't believe you would be having such a problem.

The other topic area that can effect BOINC projects is anti-virus software. Some specifically attempt to block execution of software download via the internet, which is how BOINC attempts to run. But I don't believe a download and execution is required simply to "attach" to a project. I would come after that to run your first tasks. So, based on the message, I'm thinking network problem somewhere.

If you are familiar with wireshark (it collects a trace of your network activity), I could take a look at a wireshark trace if you like. It might give another clue about what is going on. You can EMail it to me based on this info. Please post that you are doing so as I check the boards much more frequently then the EMail.
