I turned off my 5computers when I went on vacation. When I return today, I can not upload work. Need work units to run computers.

It varies by the specific tasks you get. The minimum requirement is 512MB. That would be for one CPU, but also includes some margin for the operating system. However there are tasks that require more then the minimum memory which are only dispatched to machines that have more.

If you assume that it would be unlikely to be assigned 8 tasks that require high memory all at the same time, and you assume all 8 threads are running Rosetta, then you can sort of use the margin for the operating system to account for a few high memory tasks. So, I would rough it out at 8 x 512MB = 4GB should be enough to run comfortably. I almost never see tasks taking more then about 350MB on my high memory machine.

I'm not saying you couldn't run in less then 4GB. I'm just trying to say that with 4GB available to BOINC, it shouldn't be doing excessive swapping, and I'd expect all 8 threads to be able to keep running.

Again, it will vary by specific assigned tasks, and the Project Team is always coming up with new ways to study proteins, so it will be likely to change going forward as well.

In the end, let experience be your guide. And if you feel BOINC's running is impacting your use of the machine, then you might experiment with limiting the amount of memory BOINC is allowed to use, or adding projects that typically run in less memory. Or limit it to 6 threads for a time, just to see if the machine behaves better for you or not, and confirming if BOINC is the root cause of your observations.
