"an unspecified factor in the blood of young mice can reverse signs of aging in the circulatory system of older ones" "At least some age-related defects are reversible, and the factors to reverse them are carried in blood" “They recovered functions not quite to ‘young’ levels but really quite significantly, and easily, easily distinguishable from older animals that didn’t see this ‘young blood’ within their tissues,” Wagers said. http://www.technologyreview.com/biomedicine/24421/ Also there is a nice video in the article. If that unspecified factor will be identified (most likely it is a bunch of proteins), then I guess Rosetta software could design artificial analogs that would reverse some(cold be most!) signs of aging :) Am I right? |

"an unspecified factor in the blood of young mice can reverse signs of aging in the circulatory system of older ones" So people that get a transfusion, or after surgery, are 'younger' when it is over and healthier as a result? Or does it take a long term co-mingling of the systems for this to happen? I wonder if dialysis machines will be hooked up to infuse fresh blood in the future to make the patient healthier? |

Nah. Article do not talk about just blood transfusion. Circulatory systems should be surgically connected for unspecified amount of time. With mice it is simple, cuz most lines of lab mice are genetically identical(almost). For humans you would need to make a clone of yourself (nothing impossible if you have got money/power). And, do not forget, that "unspecified factor", even from close relative, could be easily destroyed during simple blood transfusion by immune system, as it would still be foreign proteins(some of them or all) from an old guy organism viewpoint. And, it is also unclear what consequences would be for a youngster from exposure to an old blood and all proteins old organism excrete into it (assuming perfect genetic compatibility). But that part is unimportant, IMHO. |

Actually the article did talk about combining old blood with young and it said the young blood would turn old. From page 2 of the article "Researchers found that osteoblasts from old animals can make blood-forming stem cells from young mice act old." I do not know how they got it to work one way and not the other though. And the transfusion comment was my idea alone, it was just a wondering of what the consequences are, if any. |

http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-01-reverse-immune-aging.html So once a year we all go in and get younger! Oh it would be soooo nice to be young and dumb again!! |

http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-01-reverse-immune-aging.html If this works, I wonder how long before people start harvesting blood from children in third world countries for supply to the rich. |
