Hi.

One of my systems crunching for Rosetta is a Ubuntu 9.10 with:

- 2 Intel Xeon 5530 (16 cores in total)
- 12Gb. RAM

The problem I have is that... never the 16 cores are working at 100%. For example, now the cores 3, 4, 5 and 10 are at 0-5% and the rest are at 100%. 10 seconds after, the core 4 goes to 100% and the core 11 goes down at 2%... and so on.

I always have 4-5 cores at 0-5% and the rest at 100%.

In my preferences I have max. number of cores = 100.

Why not ALL the cores could be at 100%? Any ideas?.

Have you got 16 tasks downloaded to your machine? Are they all in a "running" status? Are there any messages logged? What about your preferences for memory usage?

My memory preferences are:

And... I dont have any special message in BOINC (V. 6.4.5)

If you use the boinccmd with the --get_results option (redirect output to a file) it should show you 16 tasks (plus others) with "active_task_state: 1" is that what you've got?

top should show your average active thread load as being at least 16.

Is this a new installation? Or a problem that you are just now seeing that did not occur before?

Is it possible the machine is running too hot? And that one of your settings is throttling down some activity to run cooler? Or perhaps... I think some Linux flavors have some setting that throttles down the low priority ("nice") tasks as a power saving feature?

Yes, I have active task state =1 in 16 tasks.

And... the temperature is normal in all CPU,s. Not too hot.

The priority of Rosetta tasks is "19" (very low) for all the tasks... I dont know is this is normal because the BOINC client says: "executing high priority"!.

This PC is working since October more or less in the same way.

I,m a bit frustated.

All of the BOINC tasks run at low priority. But when BOINC finds tasks that are starting to look like will have trouble completing before their deadline, then they become "high priority tasks" which basically just means that the BOINC manager is not going to suspend them and do something for another project until this task is completed. So these are approaching the point where the predicted completion time is approaching the deadline. Not really a problem per se, but may mean your machine has more work downloaded then it needs to keep busy.

Is Rosetta your only BOINC application? I don't see anything here that should be specific to Rosetta. You should have the same sort of issue with any combination of BOINC projects.

I think the next step from here would be to get debug information on the BOINC manager task management functions. This is done by making changes to the cconfig XML file. This would be useful to the BOINC developers at Berkeley.
