...just creating a little buffer there in an effort to protect others... Paul has just totally cast a jinx on himself, so this makes it easy to stay clear :)

Dear Rosetta

Is it really necessarily for the application to use more than 300MB of RAM for each unit?
I'm running this on a weak computer (my netbook when it's hooked up to some juice) and sometimes I can only run one unit at a time, due to it requesting more RAM.

Since most netbooks only sport 1GB of RAM it's really a lot that it use up more than 1/3.

What I'm asking, isn't it possible to optimize the code/change something, so it doesn't require those amounts of RAM?

Rosetta uses a lot of ram, compared with other projects. Set your preferences to use only 50% of available CPUs, so it will only load one task at a time. This works much better than trying to enforce memory constraints in preferences.

I like watching the 4GB of RAM I paid for getting used for something useful :)

Use Vista or Win7 then, they automatically use or release ram as it needs it or other programs need it.

Since I have no money now for bying additional RAM for such a gluttonous OS like Windows 7 I have changed it to Ubuntu 9.10 x64. And I am pretty satisfied now - 2 rosetta's WUs, a couple of user's applications - and we have about 60% of 2 Gb busy. On Windows in the same conditions memory occupation was about 80-85%.

btw, now I also can work normally with OS during CUDA WUs processing, without freezes or smth... :-)

Microsoft's new theory on ram is 'unused ram is wasted money' so the 80% or so you are seeing could even be a bit low. They started with this new theory in Vista and are still refining it in Win7. It is better, but Ubuntu IS better in the same amount of memory when it comes to usability!

Yep. And now I never observe how the system crying of memory insufficience... :-) It's very important while my home PC is crunching memory-consumpting WUs (of Rosetta, ibercivis and EDGeS projects) in 24/7 mode.
