XP Home:

This morning every queued WU was suspended (not by me!). I detached, uninstalled, installed 6.10.17. Could not get WUs.

Just tried again, four hours later. Got 13 WUs. As each finished download it was marked "suspended".

Help!

Tomba,

Check two different areas of Boinc Mgr.

First have a look over in the projects tab and then click on Rosetta and check to see that the suspend box is not showing. It should say "suspend" if it is running and "resume" if it is suspended.

Second, have a look in the task tab, again select each task and check to see if the above buttons show "suspend" for running or "resume" for being suspended.

If this is not the problem I would try and download the Boinc Mgr again (maybe the install went bad) or revert back to an older version (but not the 6.6.x versions) and see if the tasks run or not.

Also, tasks will be suspended for a bit when Boinc is running CPU benchmarks. It will say that in the task status and also in the messages. When it is done with benchmarking it will start up the tasks again.

Then there is one last area to check. Check the menu bar, click on activity and check that the status checked there is not "suspend".

These are the only areas I can think of that allow you to suspend activity short of the Boinc mgr program having a hiccup.

That was it! I set it to "run always" and away she went!! Many thanks.

How it got set to "suspend" is a mystery.

With a million credits, you are probably already aware of it...

The other area to check would be the amount of memory you are allowing BOINC to use. As a task gets started running it will initialize everything and allocate memory required to really get started on the study of the protein. During that first few minutes of running is when you are most likely to hit BOINC's memory limit if it is set too low. The task ends up suspended with a status of "waiting for memory". The advanced view of BOINC let's you easily see the task status and message.

Sorry, but that's so much gobbledegook to me. I'm a simple soul. I know how to get BOINC running and attach projects, but that's it.

Right now I have two WUs running on the duo. I tried doing an update to get more. Nothing. I guess by morning I'll be out of work, again.

OK, then perhaps Tom you could just describe exactly which screen you were on and what you saw that indicated everything was suspended. And the results after reviewing the things that Greg mentioned. The tabs he mentions are in the advanced view of the BOINC Manager. Or perhaps what you've changed to get two running now.

Mod, from the sounds of it, it was just a fluke mistake that happened somehow.
If he can just use the activity "switch" to get things rolling then it sounds like a simple error on his part. If everything started up after that correction, it does not sound like he was low on memory.

However you information is good to know for the future. For me it will never be a problem as Rosie uses barely half to 3/4 of my total memory even for its biggest jobs. Others may find this information useful.

Oh, we were posting at the same time. So I had missed his post saying all BOINC activity was suspended.
