Just saw on the BOINC message boards that there is a new reccommended version...

5.2.9

It is supposed to solve the connection failure problems, but I don'tknow if it actually does. Luckily I haven't run into that problem.

yup the newest version is now 5.2.10 another connection error is solved in this release, mainly to due with BOINC requesting proxy info when it doesn't need that info, no need to upgrade if you don't have any connection problems

Thanks for all the hard work Developers!

They don't seem to have confirmed it yet as the next reccommended version although the link to 5.2.10 shows the new changes since 5.2.10 so just looks like rom or whoever forgot to link 5.2.11 to that page

Rom was tired and forgot to update the download page properly. Doesn't matter though he got 5.2.12 linked in properly.

Never!!! It's a security issue especially with corporate computers.

This is a sad attitude that I see a lot from the Boinc dev community. The desire to work for the "large farms" and do things that potentially alienate the single users who want a "set and forget" project.

Another classic case is setting the config data on the web. 99.999% of other apps set the config data locally, and for Joe User running this on his e-machines system, he wants to install and forget about it.

Now, I'm not saying that we need to unilaterally switch to local settinmgs, or to auto update, but for the love of Pete MAKE IT AN OPTION!

There is no good reason, other than stubbornness or laziness on the part of the Boinc devs, not to have an option for auto update. Key word here is option.

And as for it being a security issue, whoever dereamed that up is somking something. They may BELIEVE it's a security problem, but history proves otherwise. Find a Drug ran for several years with auto-update in palce, and there were no security problems, none, nada, zilch, zip.

From the "Unoficial BOINC Wiki" section on "Automatic Update";

Because of the way it needs to be installed, the BOINC Client Software has to be manually installed.

Why that is I have no idea, and whilst I am also used to auto-updates like the Find a Drug people, having been with United Devices for over three years, if we choose to join projects running via BOINC then we just have to get used to how it's different.

I'm sure that if an auto-update facility for BOINC is possible that the developers must have a good reason for not having it.

Autoupdating the client is not exactly a 'security issue' as that term is commonly used, although there are people that are concerned about just that. The real concern is if a really bad release comes out and trashes things. With manual updating only a few hosts will be affected, with autoupdating every host connected to any BOINC project could be affected.

F-a-D also had a beta test program. Release of a version to the general public was contingent on a satisfactory beta test. It's just not that hard.

Auto-updates to BOINC and the client(s) could over-write all of the cheats and optimizations...not a bad idea in my opinion, but it appears that many members are more interested in statistics than in good science. Let's level the playing field.

Some of us just don't want "auto updates". I don't let Windows "auto update" me either......just tell me when a new "official" version is available and I'll take care of installing it.

I agree & I don't let Windows Auto Update anything either. I usually just install the OS & SP1 Or SP2 & never install any Updates after that, my PC's run just fine that way.

As far as BOINC Auto Updating I don't want that either, I figure as often as they come out with new Versions to fix the last version sooner or later one of those Updates is going to Bork the install you already have and maybe your OS if not both ...

I usually let 1 or 2 versions go by and see what the guys have to say about the latest Versions before I make a decision to Upgrade or not to something newer ...

I prefer the auto-update so you can install the program and forget it. Maybe the staff can make the auto-update an option so, who want auto-update, have it and who don't want....simply disactivate it.

I've personally was a victim of an update that messed up my system because the wrong copy was put on the download page. Luckily, it was only downloaded by a few dozen people before it was reported and removed. I can just imagine the mess it could have caused at Seti, for example, if ten of thousands of people had gotten that file.

Yes, no, security, trashing, blah blah blah.

Test the damn client before you put it to release.
Just means putting controls in place to prevent that happening.
Testing it in beta circles before hand.

You don't have to auto-update
Just like enabling Boinc Manager to launch on startup you make it an option when installing (and after!)

The science apps update themselves when the newer version is needed, your new jobs auto update themselves when you run out.
So if that is not a security, crash potential problem then I cannot see why the Boinc client is.

Think of it the revers way.
A major security issue is found in the boinc client, now this spreads the web.
The people who do not update are vunerable (they are also the average joe blog, none team player, none farm people that don't hang in the forums or visit the Boinc website everyday ...
Now that is a security issue.

Of course, if you like to manualy update, you're worried about security, that big fat tick box saying enable auto update of boinc does not get ticked.

As for the way it installs, bah, they're programmer you find a way around.

(From what I can see, download update(s), terminate apps/service, perform update script (renames, moves whatever) start app/service again).

Damn my hand are getting cold, Anyone know if you can get heated keyboards ? (like my laptop ;-)
