Hi,

Been crunching Rosetta since yesterday. Totally new to this and I may not have searched thoroughly enough so forgive me if that's the case.

I have not chosen the 'Blank Screen' option in the screensaver settings, but after running for 1 hour+, the screen blanks anyway. I run with the PC idle (therefore 'screensaver mode' only).

Latest BOINC version. XP Pro / SP3

1) Is this normal behaviour?
2) If so, can I get the graphics back after the screen has blanked, other than restarting the screensaver?

Thanks.

The most likely cause that I can think of is that your power settings have been configured to turn off the monitor after an hour.

To check if that is the case, go to your Windows Control Panel then Power Options and see if there is an entry in the "Turn monitor off" field. Setting the entry to "Never" will prevent your monitor being turned off automatically, but will probably increase the amount of power you use.

No, I'm set to Never. I'm a newbie at Rosetta but not at PC's. I'm a 30 year 'vet'... ;)

You might replace BOINC with some other screensaver and see what it does after an hour just to determine if you have a BOINC issue, or a screensaver issue.

Did Rosetta happen to complete the task at that time or something?

Ok. I will assume you have checked the obvious things then. Does the screen blanking occur after an hour running any screensaver, or is it a problem specifically with the BOINC screensaver?

You say you are new to Rosetta, but have you contributed to any of the other projects before? If so, have you encountered the same problem on the other projects?

Edit:
*I need to type quicker. Mod.Sense asked almost the same question*

Thanks for all the replies.

1) No problems with other screensavers. Only BOINC / Rosetta.
2) No other projects only Rosetta currently, although when running SETI I didn't experience this. (Not contributing to SETI atm.)

However!!...

I just came back to my machine after a couple of hours and the screensaver was running. So, hmmm..., maybe as Mod.Sense suggested, it was simply the end of a task on the two occasions it's happened. Sounds sort of logical. Presumably then, if I'd waited long enough, a new task would have started and the screensaver would have kicked in again...?

J

I am having the same problem! I can't get my screen saver to activate! I have it set so that the screen never shuts off and the screen saver goes on after a minute. What I did to fix the problem was i suspended 2 of the three other miniRosettas running at once(in which it realized it could run 2 new ones). For some reason when i did this the back ground started working.

Just to let you know, when using the screen saver, of any kind, the crunching speed slows down. Even if the pc has a dedicated video card instead of a built in one, the cpu still needs to take time from crunching to tell the video card what to do, slowing down the crunching. Most people end up just setting the screen to go blank and then using the power button to physically turn the monitor off to save a little cash when they walk away from the pc. Yes the projects spend alot of time and energy on the screen savers and they can be cool, but they do reduce the crunching speed.

Have fun and welcome to the world of crunching!!

There have been several threads over the last year or so and I and a friend have the same problem (total of 5 very different PCs). You can try all the replace BOINC and your op system and hardware options but you'll find in the end it all comes back to something wrong with Rosetta's code. Do a search on this forum and even Google and you will see this is a common problem for many. Till Rosetta's staff is able to duplicate it (apparently they can't from past posts) it remains a problem for some us. I only occassionally come back to Rosetta now to test the SS and go to other projects each time I see it still doesn't work. So I'm admittedly not a regular here.

It's something that happens to many users here at Rosetta and has received numerous troubleshooting suggestions but it is something in the Rosetta Code as the SSs work fine on other projects. At least on everyone's PC I have seen, including my own three, the Rosetta screen saver or graphics dies at a random point. If you are using only Rosetta as a screensaver it will show only a blank screen when it should show graphics. If you happen to have opened the graphics with the "Show Graphics" button, it will go blank in that window. If you attempt to close that graphics window, Windows (all versions I've tried) will say something along the lines of the app is not responding and click OK to end". The exact message you get varies by which Windows OS you use.

I've stuck my neck out on this issue before and not got anywhere so I suggest if you are having this issue know that many others have this issue with Rosetta SS too and have had for almost a year.

Also note that it doesn't hurt or kill your actual WU progress so it still finishes in most cases.
