also how often should i upgrade it I mean will the upgrades be worth the downtime of my computers to install them

How about
- disable network connection in Command menu
- stop BOINC
- backup whole BOINC folder (perhaps compress it to another location)
- perform upgrade
- run BOINC.

If everything is OK, enable network again; if something got wrong, damaged WUs should not be uploaded a you can revert to previously backuped version.

I'd say only upgrade if you're having problems or the project requires it. . If you're working now, no reason to break it :)

It would be nice to have auto updates of the Boinc client, but I'm going to play Devil's advocate here for a second, and point out that if and when it stabilizes, this will be far less of an issue.

The actual applications that do the heavy lifting DO auto update, and in the long term that'll be far more important.

auto update for the actual boinc manager was considered but not implemented due to security concerns from admins. many get uncomfortable when they install software that autoupdates
