If you are running a version 6 client that is the expected behavior. The mini apps are version 6 compliant, but the regular rosetta apps are not.

Hello,

As a new user, I am not at all clear what this all means.

Do I need to download another app on top of BOINC to view the folding proteins that are show on the videos and on the website?

Why is this information not prominent anywhere? Am I missing something?

I am using 64bit Vista.

Thanks,
Marc

No nothing you need to do on your end, other then being aware that BOINC is in a state of transition right now, and so you don't need to abort tasks from the Rosetta v5.98 application just because you don't see a screen saver. Some day all BOINC clients will be version 6, and all Rosetta work will be RosettaMini, and everyone will be able to see everything.

Understood, and thanks.

In the short term, is there anything that I can do to get the graphics?

I just installed BOINC today, and I have attached to both R@H and RALPH.

It was not clear if installing mini rosetta would do anything (nor was it clear where to actually download the software....).

Still cranking for the good of humanity, but I sure would like some eye candy!

Regards,
Marc

Yes, I wanted to get a v6 BOINC client installed my self first to verify. But you can just go to the advanced view in the BOINC manager, then go to the tasks tab, select a Rosetta task, and then click the button on the left for "show graphics". It is not a "screensaver" per se, but let's you see what your machine is working on.

Quick Guide to Rosetta@home and Its Graphics

Yes, the Rosetta version, as to whether you run "mini" or not just depends on which tasks the project assigns you, and BOINC does all the downloads for you. You can see the application name in the tasks tab as described above.

well, in my case, when the screensaver doesnt work (because its a 'beta')
the button "show graphics" is active=false ;)

thx!

Hmmm... that must be a Vista thing then. On XP, you can see the graphic with either Rosetta application. Over time, more and more of the tasks will be running Mini, so it won't matter.

Yup, on 64bit Vista, the Show Graphics is greyed out. I am using v6.2.18 of BOINC.

Partially a vista thing and partially an install mode thing. Vista is a bit more secure so getting any pre-V6 graphics to work is problematic. If you install V6 with only the screensaver/compatibility mode selected you can get graphics from both types on most XP systems. However this is not a recommended install mode, BOINC will only run when you are logged in and you are more susceptible to rouge apps.

There is no "Rosetta 6", so not sure what you are asking. Are you asking about the BOINC server version? Or the Rosetta client versions?

I've got just the opposite of what I see has been described here for the screensaver not working.

On my system, (Windows XP Pro, 32 bit, P4 3.0GHz), the Beta 5.XX work units show the screen saver just fine all the way through.

For me, all the Mini 1.54 versions don't work with the screensaver. Just shows a blank screen. That applies to the graphics window too. When I try to close that window Windows says it is not responding and uses task manager to end the graphics window.

The mini 1.54s seems to be most of the work units supplied to me these days with my preferences set to not request any paticular duration of unit. Does requesting a certain amount of hours in the preference effect which kind of work unit I'll get? I need to just get the 5.XX work units until the mini 1.54s are fixed.

Thanks........

No, any task can be run for any runtime preference. In fact, changing the preference will change the tasks you already have downloaded. So, no it does not impact what tasks you get assigned. And no, there is no mechanism to automatically refuse the mini's.

I would suggest running without the graphics, they slow the execution anyway. The graphics is the one main area that still needs revision on mini.

OK, thanks for the info. I just thought as a last ditch effort maybe changing the settings would possibly have some effect.

I can understand why the power crunchers don't want screensavers. I know the screensavers slow the processing down. I'm not really concerned much with the difference in the amount of work completed. I'm not into BOINC for the amount of work completed or the credits I receive. My slower P4 3.0GHz doesn't show much difference either way, with or without the screensaver. With my PC, I can't compete with the crunchers and don't want to. In the grand scheme of things, my sometimes crunching PC only contributes a minor number of points compared to the massive crunchers out there. Just thought I would donate it's spare screensaver time to a worthy project instead of running an aquarium screensaver or something that does absolutely nothing for society.

But it should still be an option to have a working screensaver in Rosetta or they will lose many potential computer crunchers like myself to those projects that do have appealing screensavers. I as well as thousands of others doing work for projects choose their projects both by the appeal of the project's look AND the potential value to society.

I'll just detach Rosetta and come back in a few months to see if this issue got fixed.
