Message 67299 - Posted: 21 Aug 2010, 22:43:36 UTC

I read the thread, but I have a question, seeing as I am new to BOINC, and Rosetta and Einstein, what are these credits all about? I see I have a bunch already, but what do they actually mean? Is it just an abstract for work my computer has done, and that's it? Or are they credits I can use in the BOINC e-store to get some really cool t-shirts? No, seriously, what exactly are they used for, and why do they seem so important? I have checked everywhere, including FAQ's, but nothing really delved into these "credit" things exactly.
So, if anyone can help me out here, I would greatly appreciate it. I see a few of you have been around here for awhile, so that is why I am asking.
Thank you for your time, and any consideration given to this question.

Glad to see you with Rosetta. Here are some descriptions about credit:

What are credits?
What is RAC?
Why am I earning less credits per day when I crunch Rosetta?

Einstein project scores a victory locating a pulsar from radio telescope data from 2007 from Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.
Here is a wiki short on the pulsar. And here is a short summary on who's computer found the data.

I think Pengy is off looking for a galaxy far far away! I think maybe he thinks his relatives took a trip and can't find there way back home and he thinks he is a St. Bernard Pengy!

I know several people have switched some pc's over to Einstein just to help find stuff! So they did get a bump in the number of crunchers because of the finds.

Einstein sent out a email about this and then did a press release. So if you were to look for the name of that pulsar you would come across a lot of stories, but more or less saying the same thing. So its possible the bump came from the email that was passed on or the news.

I think it was a combination of both, but either way it can be good for them. And Boincing in general, we actually DO find things!!

But we can't find a lost penguin.
He seems to have gone off the grid.
Last computer to do any talking was on the 20th.

Simap's home page says "BOINCSIMAP is a periodic project that usually has work for a few days at the beginning of each month." That means you build up alot of LTD, Long Term Debt, when there is no work and when there is Boinc tries to make up for it.

As for the internet connection, do you have rugrat housemates? If not try going into Boinc Manager and changing the 'network reminder interval', under Advanced, Options and sliding it to zero. This made mine stop telling me when there was no internet and only checks when it needs it. Apparently Boinc stops trying after enough times where it periodically checks and no connection is found, this fixed that for me.

Other than that maybe it is karma, maybe NY is just not your kind of town!

got tired of waiting, so took your advice mikey and chopped some numbers off the long term debt. reduced it to 777.203571 from 313777.xxxxxx

now to see how fast that helps get me back into rosie.
still have a ton of einstein to clear.

Yeah that is what usually happens, one project tends to fill the cache while the other is being bad! And to make a HUGE change just lop off the 777 and make it a one, leave the digits after the decimal though.

yeah ok, will do that later on.
on a different note, IF we do go on vacation this year (I have only 6 working days of vacation from last year to use) I will not be stepping out of the terminal in Dulles if we go that way. There is just no time for just 1 day.
Besides it will be winter (Nov.) when we do go.

perhaps next year when I have more days (2 weeks so far) I can do a east coast stop. I want to see the capitol area during the week when more is open and would like to go visit a family friend in FL that I havent see in ages.
then there is GA to stop in at as well one of these years, an old church member from back in Seattle that transplanted there. So you see, I have lots of places to go and not enough time to do them!!!

Understand. Sux, but understand.

Next year is good also, although you may need more than 2 weeks!

On a semi-related note, got more correspondence from BE-land, apparently looking for additional krill. I'll e-mail you off-line for your thoughts. Don't know if they're trying to double-bill for krill or not, lol !

Well think one is for the transport and the other is for the white coats.
Use your magic scanner and send via email and will have a look at what those crazy people in BRU want from you.

Got to love this idiot:

A 33-year-old Bremerton man showed up for a court appearance on a meth charge Tuesday carrying a bag of the drug in his pants pocket, according to documents filed in Kitsap County District Court.

Before making his court appearance, the man had to be booked into and released from the Kitsap County jail. That’s standard procedure for these sorts of crimes, officials said.

While at the jail, a guard performed a security pat-down and found a bag of meth in the man’s right front pocket. The 33-year-old was then booked into the Kitsap County jail on $10,000 bail on the new felony possession charge.

so, if we were to take our ramblings down a notch or two, would the thread have to be renamed to "major chat here" ?
