First, let me again thank DB for taking a few moments from his busy schedule to post and provide some feedback to the donors who are interested in this topic.

I note that the comment specifically addressed the MS xBox, and made no mention of the Sony PS3.

<snip>

A slightly stripped down version of the Cell BE, but when the cpu for the PS3 was originally speculated and rumored about, who would have thought that it would find its way into IBM blade servers, and now mainstream laptops?

In no way am I discouraging the Project from investigating the potential offered by the xBox.

What I am doing however, is encouraging them to take a second look at the Sony PS3 and the Cell BE.

In spite of potentially limited cache/ram (does this limitation also apply to the xBox? I honestly don't know enough about the xBox's architecture), perhaps there still could be some use made from the large and varied installed base of the Cell BE's.

EXACTLY what I've been waiting to hear !!!

all the "connections" in the world wouldn't mean anything if the Project had no interest.

I myself don't have any direct connections at Sony, but I do to someone who is working at NIH/NLM and very interested Rosie and the NLM's sponsorship of Casp. I can find out if any of their connections may have some connections to Sony. Or, if no one else has any, I'll try "knocking on doors" myself, lol !!!

So what about it Rosie crunchers, anyone with Sony PS3 connections?

Although I do not, I could ask around...I've got plenty of other connections and work at an extremely large US-based company.

On a similar note, what about helping to define our plea by creating an online petition or poll. Something to show Sony that X number of people or Y percentage of the BOINC (or RAH, whatever) are interested in PS3. Seriously. BOINC or RAH should take a leadership role in this by taking the 3 hours to build a simple web page to collect votes/signatures/what have you.

I have a PS3...it's been doing nothing for 5+ months. I know a bunch of other people that have PS3s and I can guarantee you that I could get them to run a BOINC client if I asked.

For now, why not point them in the direction of Folding@home?

Or check out PS3GRID if you would like to get BOINC credit. It is Linux based but the learning curve is not too steep.

SETI and Yoyo has also a SPE application for the PS3. SIMAP and Einstein a PPE only application for the PS3.

I've written David Baker a PM some days ago about some posible solutions to make a PS3 application, but did not get any awnser...

This is what I am doing at the moment.

SETI has an ad going for someone to port to PS3... I guess the end goal is to have an app that will run through the GameOS, same as F@H...

I'm not sure on Rosetta's chances, since it's similar enough to F@H that Sony might just ask 'why'? ...Because BOINC is better, of course! : P
