Message 3319 - Posted: 15 Nov 2005, 21:20:30 UTC

My pc started running both the seti and rosetta projects at the same time. Then-I noticed Rosetta was up to 5 gigs of hard disk space and climbing. WHAT THE ?!?! I killed it and reset my general prefs to only use 5 gigs max or 50%. Now-Rosetta us using -342134 and some other numbers of disk space. Is anyone else seeing this? It is running ok now, but what if I had been away from my pc?!?!

I've never heard of this. . my guess is it's something to do with your client/computer. . it would take a long time to dl 5gigs from the server.

Most-all of the installs I'm managing (~250) are less than 30mb.

What client and OS versions are you running?

It usually only works on small ones like yours. And nothing was listed in the transfer tab. I'm running 5.2.6. XP service pack 1.

And my entire BOINC directory is now 2.72 gigs. Isn't that rather large? I can email a screenshot of the bogus disk space if need be...

15.5 mb. Is this correct? Seti is smaller.

16 megs is in the ballpark. If your whole folder is 3ish gigs, what subfolder is taking up all the space (since it's not seti or rosetta)?

c:program filesboincslots is 2.7 gigs. I have to leave boinc off now. Every time I run it-it goes nuts. I was watching my page file usage...it went up to 2 gigs...as soon as I kill boinc.exe-everything returns to normal. This started yesterday. I tried removingupgrading to the latest boinc client this morning but things are still nutty.

Ok-I have two folders in the slots subfolders. One is 0 and the other is 1. The 0 contains seti files and is very small. The 1 folder contains rosetta files and is 2.7 gigs!

I reset the rosetta project and it redownloaded all rosetta files. Now everything has returned to normal. I will monitor it for a few days...

Would have been interesting to know what file in the rosetta slot had gone mad...

Yeah-I know. I wanted to get back to normal though, so that's why I reset it. I will watch it though to be sure! If it happens to you and you have a relatively normal pc-you will know. Boinc.exe will be running the processor at full 100% and the page file will be running off the scale. This means that you can't run anything else so...you will know. For the record-I have a 2.8 ghz machine with 512 megs DDR ram.

AHHHHH! HELP! Sadly-it is doing it again. I figured out some more of it this time. When it goes nuts-the following happens:

1. Both seti and Rosetta run at the same time (crunch data)
2. My page file is used up and my pc grinds to a halt
3. Killing boinc releases my pc and all is well
4. The file stderr in the "1" folder in c:program filesboincslots begins growing in size VERY QUICKLY. I have seen it rocket to 9 gigs before I killed it.

I can send screenshots to anyone if they give me an email address.

This started after installing rosetta. I never had this problem with seti. I have the newest client also. If I can't resolve this-Rosetta is getting the ax.

Sounds like Rosetta is repeatedly spitting out some kind of error on your box. stderr is the file where that stuff goes. If you still have the file, it would be great if we could see a little piece of it. The first 50 lines, or the last 50.

It would be helpful if you unhide your computer, no critical info is displayed so do not worry....

Ok-I might turn it back on and do that. I had to delete it though. It was too big and nothing would open it.

JohnnyB, if you get in a bind about this, let me know here and I'll post a couple of links to Win32 "head" and "tail" programs that will take a file of arbitrary size, and give you the top and tail of it.

That might give us a chance to figure out what's going on.

I just remembered that 2 days ago I had a crash of the graphic card from rosetta graphics that caused a continuous loop. This is probably the cause of this. I upgraded the drivers since. We will know in a few days what size it is again.
