Message 52441 - Posted: 14 Apr 2008, 14:26:54 UTC

Something went wonky at my end on 1 April and both Rosetta and Seti stopped talking to my PPC Mac (or rather Boinc seemed to think it was in constant use). So when I saw that I took the opportunity to up update the client and set thinks running.

Seti seems quite happy now, but Rosetta has thrown constant client errors and hit the 25 units a day quota (according to messages).

Is this a problem at my end, or has a model gone wonky?

Nope. I have 5.10.45.

Here's a sample exit status: Exit status: 10 (0xa)

Here's the sterout 9whatever that is):

stderr out

<core_client_version>5.10.45</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
process got signal 10
</message>
<stderr_txt>

</stderr_txt>
]]>

I'm guessing a signal 10 is a bad thing.

Yes, definately looks like something didn't go right on your end. Since you have no tasks on-board at this point, I'd suggest completely uninstalling BOINC and reattach to the projects.

Pardon the dupes.

Anyway - deinstalled boinc, reinstalled.
Same error - work taking about 1 second for a unit.

Very frustrating.

So your machine had been working great, then on a given day all (i.e. both) BOINC projects began having problems. Is SETI getting the signal 10 error as well? And you've uninstalled everything, and started again and still have the same problem.

...any chance you changed something on your end about that time? Such as the user ID that you signon with? Or authorities to certain directories. Also, you mention an ominous date when the problems started. Any chance someone's messin' with you?

I'm the admin of Lattice, and I just thought it was an odd coincidence that suddenly (past week or so) I'm seeing hundreds of errors from mac clients with this same signal 10 error code. Googling the problem turned up this thread and I thought it was a strange coincidence.

Figured out the problem. It's because my latest release of an application was compiled on 10.5 and not made backwards compatible =(

Oh you are kidding me. Do you have a source for this?

Can anyone confirm this, or point to me where I can seek confirmation?

Right, so after A LOT of rummaging I found a message from the Boinc mailing list describing the apparent need to recompile the latest client for Tiger - with no mention of Panther, which my semi-retired Mac mini is running. Back-grading to a (really very) old version of the client seems to have got the project working again.

Who do I tell that the system requirements pages for Boinc/Mac need to be corrected?

Do they need to be corrected? I am currently running BOINC 6.10.16 on Panther 10.3.9 and have observed no problems whatsoever with the 5.x and 6.x BOINC beta releases (other than problems also found in the stable versions of course).

You might be right, you might not. All I know is that the sketchy help I've got points to an issue with the latest 5.x version and that an earlier version works properly. Maybe it's a PPC issues, maybe it's Panther or maybe it is some bizarro random glitch. Sadly the Isreali site that posted the reference email is now throwing a hissy fit so I can't link to it for you to form your own view.

I have a functioning system that is helping the science so that will do me for now.
