Is there away to prevent the current task from having to be restarted after I shut down my computer?
The first time I did a simple shut down and restart the next morning. The second time, my machine froze and I mechanically shut it off.
Is there anyway to save my progress?

Sounds like you are mixing two issues there. If your machine is locking up (which has been happening to some Unix users), that's a problem the Project Team is working to fix.

As for saving work done, no there's nothing you can do to save more, unless by chance you happened to set a very large time when BOINC can use the disk drive. But otherwise, they are designed to restart and recover ok. Any time you turn off the machine, so work will be lost. Rosetta stashes a copy of work in progress periodically, this is called a checkpoint. But there are some types of work that cannot checkpoint very frequently yet. But most will save their work about every 15min.
