We do live in a world where there are millions programmers and you guys are really busy doing Rosetta, I wouldn't want the project to fall behind to the production of graphics. Why not post a few a contest of who can develop with the most streamlined and optimized graphics system, Post the API's and a test WU specifically for them and give it a few months. Do what SETI did, make known on the Discovery channel and make it a contest, You want to genereate interest, I am certain that this would do it. Any takers on this idea ????????? [repost to my last thread, sorry, want people to see] |

Uhm.. Well this would be nice, but Jack is already working on a graphics "screensaver". It's almost done, and in BETA, IIRC. |

I know that, and that is a very good point. And maybe this thread is slightly ahhh... a little late. But even if so, maybe for an upcomming version, the whole point is to get the community more involved and to drive our participants up to the next level. Its an open ended question more or less, just an idea. I have seen the preview of the beta screensaver and its looking great. But really people, how does the idea pan out, for a future version or maybe even for rosetta@home II ????, which I imagine is eons away, if at all. |

I think this is a cool idea. One problem is that there aren't really clean APIs to post. So developing the screen saver is pretty tricky without knowing a fair bit about rosetta internals. It might take even more of our development time to make it easy for others to write a screen saver. But we are thinking about ways to interactivity to the screen saver that might allow for some kind of contest. It wouldn't necessarily be a programming contest. More something along the lines of analyzing what you see in trajectories that are shown on the screen saver. |
