Dr. Baker asked that a list of people interested in beta testing the home game of Rosetta@home be compiled. I think it might work best if we do this via the "Informational Moderator" that we've set up.

If you'd like to participant in the beta, send an EMail to:
rosettaNOmod.SPzilla at yaAMhoo.comERS
(and just remove NOSPAMERS from the above and replace the word "at" with the @ sign for an EMail address).

We will create a distribution list under that Yahoo! account for those involved in the testing so everyone stays informed.

This keeps the EMail addresses and etc. a little less public. So we will plan to distribute information about the beta from that EMail account.

So, just send an EMail with the following subject line: "Please add me to Rosetta Game beta list" and we'll get you an acknowledgement sent so you can easily add that mod.zilla account to your "not SPAM" list or direct any EMails to a specific folder or whatever you like.

--Mod.Sense

A note for other moderators, the password to the EMail account is the same as the moderator account on GMail.

[mathgeekishness]

Of course it's a lucky number: (3^0) + (3^1) + (3^2) = 13

GAME ON!

...if you have had the thought perhaps the project team has been less attentive on the message boards and etc. then normal, I've now realized why! ...they've all been playing the Rosetta home game!! ...and it's addictive!

I just got to try the game today for my first time. I must say two people walked behind me and saw the game on my screen... the first was very interested, and knew I'm "involved" with Rosetta. He immediately asked for a copy of it because "I like stuff like that". As soon as he saw me grab the 3D protein and rotate it, he was hooked! He wanted VR googles for it. He asked if it was an ACTUAL protein, or just some kind of example. The thought that it is indeed a real protein, and that if you truely master the game, you will bring new understanding to medical science was a great bonus in his way of thinking.

The second guy walked behind me and said "Is that DNA?"... I explained it was a protein, but chemically similar to DNA... and he said "...you get to work on the most INTERESTING STUFF". ...ummm I didn't SAY it was for work :) ...anyway I take that as a sign that the game has GREAT "curb appeal". So that means you are most definately on the right track here!

They say the meek shall inherit the earth... if the 12yr olds of the planet play this video game anywhere NEAR as many hours as they play their others... they will acquire an intuitive knowledge of how proteins work and how to solve their conformations quickly. Seems as though very soon, Dr. Baker's going to be out there interviewing Gen-Y'ers like his son to figure out how they consistently score so high on their models, so he can incorporate the same concepts into the Rosetta program to arrive at better models ...faster.

With both visual and audio feedback on your progress, along with realtime updates on how your score compares to others that are working on the same protein...right now. And with your ranking up on the list amongst the scientists (Dr. Baker's got some catchin' up to do now on protein #6!), I definately think it can hold the interest of the 12yr old as well as adults.

Still plenty of room for more testers, so keep those cards and letters coming (see instructions in original post of this thread).

So it sounds like you received your user ID in the EMail. Now go to the site mentioned and do the download. There is a program that must be downloaded to your PC.

Why can't users just log in with their Rosetta account and get it?

Why do we have to expose our personal email accounts to the anonymods to participate?

Doesn't anyone in BOINC have a clue about privacy issues?

we aren't fully openning up the game at this point because our servers might not be able to handle the load (sizeable due to the interactivity), and because we are still perfecting it

None of which addresses the privacy issue.

Privacy issue,
It's quite simple, if you don't want to test it by sign up the the current privacy rules for testing the game then there is nothing to worry about. If you do agree with the privacy rules then you can join.

I cannot see what the fuss is about.

I assume they will link the game to the account (it's suppose to be the screen saver eventualy, which I assume will be a screensaver option... well that's what I remember from many many months back) But if this is still the JAVA version then I assume since it's testing there is just no point in integrating it to the BOINC database at this point.... aka work in progress.

Wow! We've more then doubled the number of testers from the Rosetta@home user community. Pretty soon we'll have enough people to challenge BakerLab to a head to head grudge match with team support.

For those of you using it, what are your thoughts on what you've seen of the game so far?

You raise a valid point. We definitely care about security, and this will become more apparent when we come closer to the wide release.

The current version of the game is a very early beta, with some of the key parts missing including a way to controllably grow the game ecosystem. Once the core of the game is in (which should be only a few weeks away, possibly even sooner), we'll switch to a viral invite system (similar to the way gmail spread a few years ago), which should address your privacy concerns, as well as enable us slowly ramp up the load on our servers.

How stupid is it for everyone to get all bothered about posting an email on a forum - gotta hide it from the spambots and all- and then turn around and VOLUNTARILY give your email account to some gang of anony-mods? May as well just post it here.

Why not just have people post here that they want to test, you can use PMs or use project email to send the game info to the Rosetta account holder.

Nobody has to worry about the anonymods getting your email accounts that way.

I'm also a bit worried about this "viral" approach to spreading the game about. Why not just make it downloadable by every Rosetta participant once it's released? If you want your buddy to play, have 'em join Rosetta.

I believe the "viral" concept pertains to how word about the game is spread. Not to how the game itself is distributed. At the time the game's beta was being planned the PM feature was not available on the boards.

The idea of growth by invitations will allow us to grow the gamebase without crashing the servers along the way. The networking and datastorage demands of the game are significantly higher than that of Rosetta@home so we want to grow slowly and in a managed way without shutting the game down for days.

Fold It! project is completely different from Rosetta@home. No user databases are shared.

So why is it advertised as the "Rosetta@home" game here in the Rosetta@home Science forum???
