Hello,

Rosetta has slowly been eating more and more ram on my Ubuntu Linux desktop. Its now got to the stage where it's eating 60% of my 512 Mb. Now I know, 512 isn't a lot, but I've never needed any more with Ubuntu. (Windows, I could do with some more...)

Can someone advise on whether rosetta is now eating more than 256MB whilst running, and if so, is it only on Ubuntu Linux?

Nothing specific to Linux or the various flavors.

...but some tasks require more memory to run then others, and so tasks that require more memory are only sent to machines with over I think it was 496MB. Which allows a machine with 512MB and 16MB reserved for a graphics card to still be able to run one of the large memory tasks.

What is the name of the task you are running?? Perhaps someone else has a task from the same batch and could compare memory usage.

Oh, I see now you're probably running them straight in order, so you are probably on one called:
1rop__BOINC_SYMM_FOLD_AND_DOCK_RELAX-1rop_-crystal_foldanddock__2257_60630_0

I happen to have a couple of those running on Windows right now and yes, they are taking more memory then the low memory work units would.

So that seems to confirm my thought that what you are seeing is normal. The memory will be available again once the task is completed.

You can establish guidelines for how much memory BOINC is allowed to use both when you are using your machine, and with you are not (when you might allow more memory to BOINC). So, if your machine is starting to get sluggish for you, you could either adjust the General Perferences on the website, adjust the local preferences on the host, or have BOINC snooze for a while until you finish working on the machine.

It is about halfway through and now it is patiently waiting for memory.

I am having "waiting for memory" problems running a dual core,P4, xp, with .5gig RAM running Rosie only. So even though these memory intensive Rosie WUs are being sent to machines with .5 gig or greater, the two cores are gobbling up all the memory, and there's not enough left to finish. Other than get more memory, which I plan to do, any suggestions?

You might review your BOINC General Preference for the venue of the machine and see what % of available memory you are allowing BOINC to use. If you only run BOINC when your machine is idle, and you can endure a little sluggishness upon startup, you could probably allow BOINC to use 100% of memory when idle. If you actively use your machine while BOINC is crunching, you have to be a bit more careful. But gradually increase the % BOINC is allowed to use until your begin to feel it in your user experience and then back it off a little from there.

With the more recent versions of BOINC, you can change these preferences locally on each specific host as well if you prefer not to change your General Preferences (which is done via the "Participants" link on top of this message board webpage).
